The companion I was going for was bird or pot of awakening. Bird I noticed had lower upkeep, but following path of the totem warrior buys time until I actually would need to invest into that. I figured with failed merchant and looting, id gain consistant coinage during downtime. Eventually being able to have a pet to use beast sense.

I would not plan on much happening during downtime unless your DM has said they’re breaking out some homebrew for it. In which case I’d expect the first session to consist of several hours of everyone sitting around doing little as you work through the rolls, actions, and tables one person at a time. Your major source of revenue is going to be adventuring, anything else typically amounts to a lemonade stand, relatively speaking.
