SO... I joined a campaign a while back and used a character someone already created. The Dungeon Master told me that the person is still using the character and that he doesn't know what will happen if I delete it on my end. It's currently deactivated in the campaign, but I don't want to risk deleting it just in case it is a problem later. However, it is taking up one of my character slots https://vlc****.
I believe if you go to the campaign screen a character you have claimed gives you the option button to "unassign". Then it becomes an unassigned character on a separate list but same screen as the campaign. I believe the DM can still update or effect the character, but you can't through your account.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
If someone else made it, isn’t it on their account anyway? Can’t they just make a copy (there’s a button right there on the character builder for this) and then you can delete it and they use the copy and rename it (or just get rid of the “copy of…” part of the name?
If you have ownership of the character and can edit it, then it is your character to do with as you please.
If you have unassigned it in the campaign, then it shouldn't appear in your slots - if it does, then just delete it anyway, since it belongs to you and not this "other player".
If you make the Character Unassigned the DM can claim the character and it will move ownership of the character to the DM and remove it from your character slots. It will still count against your character slots as long as it remains unclaimed. Claiming is the action that actually reassigns ownership though.
