Is it possible to play DND by yourself? Or is that just writing a book. I asked my sister if she wanted to play but she said no. But can you dm and play at the same time?
Strictly speaking, it is possible to play solo—but doing so is going to be difficult and you’ll have to be incredibly effective at divorcing your actions from your metagame knowledge. Personally, I do not see the appeal - what makes D&D fun and sets it apart from playing a video game is the social interaction and the need to react to other human’s decisions when presented infinite impossibilities. Solo, you’d probably be better off playing a game like Baldur’s Gate.
That said, there is an older thread, linked here, about D&D solo play that has a lot of discussion about how viable it might be. More important than the discussion, a number of users linked to third party products which are designed for D&D solo play, which might be helpful to you if you decide to give it a try.
There are guides and modules that can educate you how to play a solo campaign. Basically it comes down to more dice roles to dictate a decision point or direction of the adventure. But it is possible. I would recommend seeking options to play the game with others, but if you are interested in learning the mechanics or trying to DM; then there are options to play a solo campaign.
A VRPG version of D&D like Baldur's Gate 3 (currently in early access) or Solasta Crown of the Magister (OGL/SRD-based, currently on Xbox Gamepass) are great ways to play D&D alone and will at the very least teach the basics.

Look up the Solo Adventurer's Toolbox on DMs Guild.
