So I'm playing a lovely level 13 wizard lady that I have been playing for 3 years. I HAD a staff of power.... and I broke it to kill my arch nemesis in a desperate play to turn the tide of battle.
The I instantly got teleported to the 9th layer of hell, Nessus.
I hear that Nessus is lovely this time of year. Enjoy.
I have never seen a retributive strike done in desperation before, but sounds like a great story around the table for years to come.
This, plus Hell (a) normally has rules and (b) can usually be negotiated with.
Just be careful about it.
The problem is that the rules in Hell normally include things like "disembowel all visitors found on layer nine without proper authorization, a permit signed in triplicate, and 666 forms of ID."

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

I do not recall Dante, nor any other visitor to Hell (rather than sent there by way of dying a corrupt LE person) having to do or deal with any such things. The rules also limit the conditions someone can arrive and regulate what can be done with them.
The Divine Comedy is not and never has been part of D&D canon. Lawful Evil in D&D has always been in part about soulless, bureaucratic evil that crushes everyone under excessive rules and regulations that serve no purpose beyond their cruelty. Lawful Evil is not "nicer" or "safer" than Neutral Evil or Chaotic Evil.

this is fine right??? :P
Well, it sounds inconvenient, but if you die in hell and that's not where your soul 'belongs' it should be possible to just resurrect you out of there, so it's not a lot worse than the up to 320 damage you'd have taken if you hadn't been teleported.
When Asmodeus's minions find out how you got there, they'll likely kick you up to Cania and let Mephistopheles deal with you as he will, he's the Devil most associated with arcanists (probably a riff on his role in the Faust myth) and if the PC detonated a staff of power I'm sure Mephistopheles would have one of his minions debrief the wizard for Cania's files before they decide what to do with her.
I don't think Cania has "files" canonically, but it's described as having many souls of spell casters cloistered in frozen studies, the price of their bargain basically becoming intellectual labor for Mephistopheles various research programs.
Plus Mephistopheles has a legit stat block in Minsc and Boo's Journal of Villainy on DM's Guild.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
In the DMG, on page 64, it says, “No planar portals connect directly to the lower layers of the Nine Hells, by Asmodeus's orders. As such, the first layer of Avernus is the arrival point for visitors to the plane.”

I might give 6thLyranGuard the benefit of the doubt, and assume that his comment was meant to be taken as humorous.

Level 13 means 7th level spells. 7th level spells mean teleport and plane shift. Do you have either of those spells?

Wait, isn’t it impossible to teleport into Nessus with magic? You’d just appear in Avernus.
In the DMG, on page 64, it says, “No planar portals connect directly to the lower layers of the Nine Hells, by Asmodeus's orders. As such, the first layer of Avernus is the arrival point for visitors to the plane.”
Good catch, I think that's generally true, I still say after some infernal bureaucracy, the wizard winds up in Cania.

Yeah, probably. And then maybe they’ll sign some contracts.
