Am planning a lvl 20 battle royale with some friends and I had a question about the Force cage. Can I
A) cast force cage to keep myself safe? (Nothing can penetrate it in either direction if used as a cube, with a few exception, if I read it right)
B) Take the cage down at will when it's favorable to me. (Since this would be last resort and I probably don't want to be in there for more than a few rounds.)
You guys are in for a bit of a rude awakening about high level PvP, especially if you're allowing things like Forcecage :p
Anyways, yes you can cast Forcecage with yourself inside the area, but no you can't take it down at will. It lasts for an hour or until it's hit by Disintegrate.
Oh, Trust me. we have no clue what we're doing. Just needed a filler week and figured why not. I fully expect everyone to get blown to pieces quickly. We only banned instant kill features.
That's how I read the spell too. Glad to see that is how it works.
The spell Forcecage doesn't mention anything about Disintegrate, no mention of Concentration and no means of stopping it. Once it's up, it's up for 1 hour, regardless. I can't remember the rules regarding antimagic, so that might work, I'm not sure.
There is one thing worth bearing in mind and is DM-dependent. It mentions being able to escape the cage using teleportation or interplanar travel. Whether creatures can use that to gain entry is up to your DM (and given it lasts an hour, and that it is logical that it would work, I'd say it's possible), and worth considering before burnings 7th level slot for protection..****y to trap yourself in a small room with your enemy.
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

Forcecage doesn't need to mention Disintegrate. It's a creation of magical force, Disintegrate destroys those.
Thanks for the replies guys. I'm usually the DM (though we'll be more by committee for this one) and now that it's pointed out teleporting in would be something I'd definitely have to take a look at. Unfortunately, the Resilient Sphere spell wouldn't work because I was making a warlock. I planned the Force cage bit more as a joke, as in I cast this huge 7th level spell... just to sit in there with a coffee while they kill each other and my familiar streams it to me.
A spell like that might let you recharge in safety but also lets your enemy do the same.
If your facing a group and hope to be the last one standing they might just look at each other and decide your the real enemy and just gang up on you and take you our first. Real people are not like NPC's and WILL work actively against just you if you stand out. Only nails that stand out get hammered down.
Cast delayed blast fireball from a scroll then Run to a corner cast forcecage on yourself then invisibility and just sit for an hour - everyone will forget your there in the mixup following the fireball.
They won't, but more importantly, casting from a scroll is still casting -- if the spell requires concentration, it still requires concentration. So, no Invisibility, unless you're doing it after the DBF goes off.
Like a wall of force spell, a forcecage resists dispel magic, but it is vulnerable to a disintegrate spell, and it can be destroyed by a sphere of annihilation or a rod of cancellation.
Whenever you read something spellwise that is unfair or poorly worded, go to the 3.5E PHB to get clarification. The editors screwed up on this spell. Most control spells have some form of counter, for this spell its disintegrate.
I don't know about giving that as blanket advice. In 3.5e, if you had around 50 ranks in Survival and the Track feat (in other words, you're above level 20 and this is your specialization), you unlocked the insane "epic" ability to... Know what kind of creature left the tracks you're looking at. That's right, you're not entitled to the knowledge that these are bear tracks until you've broken the level cap.
I just stumbled on that yesterday and thought it was incredibly funny.

DM: You come across signs of a struggle! Drops of blood litter the ground and the campsite is in disarray. But nobody seems to be around.
PC: I look for tracks. I have tracking and 49 survival.
Dice: 15
DM: You find loads of tracks!
PC: Let's follow them!
DM: You follow some tracks carefully. Very soon, you come across a small beetle chewing on a blade of grass just outside the camp.
PC: I tracked a beetle?
DM: With those numbers, you can follow the tracks of even the smallest insect. And they. Are. Everywhere.
PC: I don't. . . I don't want to follow beetles. I want to follow the kidnappers.
DM: I have some bad news for you.

Just an add to this you could use Resilient Sphere instead. Lower level and has almost the same protections and you can drop it at will.
It is subject to a disintegrate spell and you can be moved around but does give you the protection at a much lower spell level.

That was just sad
