I was creating a homebrew subclass recently and was told that it was too similar to Druid: Circle of Spores to be publishable. I did some research into Circle of Spores and frankly, I don't see any similarities. Does anybody know how DDB determines that homebrew content is too similar to pre-existing content. Not mad, not looking for a fight, this post is not meant to attack DDB, I'm just confused. Thanks in advance!
It seems to be the default it compares to no matter what, I once accidentally saved a completely blank subclass and was told that it was too similar to Circle of Spores to publish.
This all just feels kind of mean to Circle of Spores honestly.
Honestly I don’t know myself as I haven’t done much with the homebrew options for a while now. You might get more answers in the Homebrew forum (link below) though I fully understand why you’re posting here: you just get more responses, which I certainly believe is frustrating.
Yeah, I've gotten that too. To be honest, DDB has always been kinda janky that way, I'm not sure why...
TO BE FAIR, one of my homebrews was based on on the Circle of Spores druid, so that makes sense, but there have been others where it said that and had nothing to do with it, so I'm not sure what the deal is.
The "too similar to circle of spores" message is the 'default' error message (think of it like error message 1 on the list of all error messages). This means that sometimes if the system detects an error but can't find a message that corresponds to that error, it falls back to error message 1; too similar to circle of spores.
Things to check:
You've got subclass features are all appropriate levels including special additional levels such as druid subclasses needing a level 3 feature
There's no placeholder text, 'tbc', 'pending' or other filler text or single sentences
You haven't got any external links or non-SRD content mapped
