hi folks, using starry form chalice, could i cast cure wounds on myself and also use the bonus heal on myself also? or does it have to be a different target? the way it reads implies the same target can benefit from both, but my players insist its 2 different creatures and have made me doubt myself lol.
Chalice. A constellation of a life-giving goblet appears on you. Whenever you cast a spell using a spell slot that restores hit points to a creature, you or another creature within 30 feet of you can regain hit points equal to 1d8 + your Wisdom modifier.
I think the design intent is that the original creature and the target of the bonus heal should be two different creatures. It is worded poorly though.
Technically you are correct but ultimately your DM is the arbiter of stuff like this. It's not really worth arguing with your table over it.
Yeah, I don't see any reason you couldn't double down on this in both directions... you could double heal yourself, or double heal a single ally if you feel like it. If it was limited in that way it would say "different creature" or "other creature" or some other words to clarify that the two targets must be different.
"...you or another creature within 30 feet of you..."
You count as "you", so you fit this qualification.
"...can regain hit points equal to 1d8 + your Wisdom modifier."
This is the consequence.
So yes, you can cast Cure Wounds on yourself and also get the bonus healing. The only point of potential contention is if you cast the spell on, say, Bob, then tried to apply the bonus healing to Bob as well, depending on your interpretation of "another creature". To my view, that is a stretch though, and the "another" is referring to a creature other than you (since it already explicitly included you). Any creature within 30ft of the caster of the spell is a valid target for the bonus healing, including you.
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
As written this can work several ways: 1) you cast a healing spell on another creature and you get the bonus healing 2) you cast the spell on yourself and and give the bonus healing to the other creature 3) you cast the spell on the other creature and give them the bonus healing 4 you take it all for yourself 5) you cast the healing spell on a creature (not yourself) then give the bonus healing to a third creature ( within 30’ of you) essentially it’s open ended so you can use it how you need in the situation depending on who needs the healing the most and how many need healing

Cure Wounds fits this description.
"...you or another creature within 30 feet of you..."
You count as "you", so you fit this qualification.
"...can regain hit points equal to 1d8 + your Wisdom modifier."
