So I have this character I need help with, I've made many variations of her. She's a teithling privateer and the eldest child of a well renowned shipping and sailing enterprise, but because of her demonic heritage she wasn't made heir of the business. but at age 18 she was given responsibly and honor to be captain of the flag ship of the enterprise's fleet, the sea crown, a position traditionally given to the heir of the enterprise, she now sails the seas as its fearsome, that may earn her birthright.
I had cycled this character through many classes and combinations, I wanted her to wield magic but at the same time be really good in a fight, any suggestions?
Ahoy there! Sounds like yer seaworthy tiefling may have a landlubber for a familial employer!
There are a few DM's who would allow you to take a feat at level 1, but not all, so let's assume you cannot have a Magic Initiate feat. Also, I assume tiefling is set in stone, so we won't switch to a Variant Human and get a feat that way.
I would suggest Paladin. Given the setting, I don't see why any DM would be against you using Critical Role's "Oath of the Open Sea" for thematic reasons alone. You get a moderate amount of spells, but are also a good frontliner. Choose the 'Sailor' or 'Pirate' background and you should be good to go.
And a Piratical Tiefling Paladin sounds cool.
There are plenty of ways to make that character. This is just how I would do it. Good luck!

Fathomless warlock! Path of the blade of you really want to be a front line type.
I played a somewhat similar character for a while and it was a ton of fun!
A teithling? Maybe a dentist would be a good pick ;)
All joking aside, I agree with Oath of the Open sea paladin. If you want magic AND good at swordfighting, thematically it's hard to beat that.
I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
