Hello everyone....! I just found this site and am super excited to, maybe get started playing D&D....Before i jump in the deep end...I need to know if having voice and a video link that will show me is a must have for these adventures. I have a severe brain injury and talking, quite literally, for me, is almost impossible and a video cam that will show me is well beyond my computer skills...Can I play without literally talking and/or having a video of myself...??? I can type with the best of them and am hoping there is a place for me..???
You can do it however you want. I'd personally recommend PlayByPost, which is all by text. If you want to set up a.game, you can do it however it works for you.
If you're looking for a game, you can try the PlayByPost Forum. Alternatively, you can try the Discord Server.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
You can search for online groups that only do text. There is a Looking For Group forum on this site. Other options are Roll20, Fantasy Grounds and there's always the subreddit r/lfg that you can give a try.
Thank you for responding..!! I have done...what I should have done to begin with....some research and your suggestion is just what I may need. I have absolutely underestimated the complexity of this...game seems to not be the right word...I am even more interested in the playbypost idea ..laughs, now that I know it exists....!!! Thank you for the info..! I'm still essentially lost in the complexity and am not even sure where to start...Create a character...or even a few..just to see how the process works...or find a game for absolute beginners and appeal to the DM for guidance....? So many questions...My adventure, it seems, is sorting out the "game" itself..at least for now....Thanks again..!!
Thanks for responding....!! I'm exploring the play by post options...and that seems like it.....in some form, is the way for me to proceed. I'll admit I'm more than overwhelmed by all of this....I do wonder...I am in the "real" world....actually an old man. Is it safe to assume there are folks that play from all age groups from all over the world..? Seems to me in the early stages of my adventures here that finding the right group to play with is key..or at least one of the keys to the game experience..?? Thanks for the info...!!!!
that is good to read..about all ages playing....I have to admit...i'm still bewildered by all of this and am having a difficult time even getting started..with anything...Should I create a character or more just to see how that all works..? If I can manage that....I bring this character to a group..if/when I can find one..or is there a particular character each group would/will need..? laughs...i'm obviously way over my head here...I don't want to be THAT newbie, however, I could use all the help I can get....
Generally the Dungeon Master/Game Master will have their own rules for creating characters. So it's not likely that you'll get to just import one.
D&D 5e is designed so that any group combination will work. It's more of a character personality thing than a class thing. The player's buy in is making a character that wants to go on the adventure and that wants to work together with the party. The guy saying "You've given me no real reason to want to save the blacksmith's daughter. I'm staying in the tavern." will watch a game where his character sits in the tavern and while the rest of the group's characters go on an adventure. The gal saying "I want to be an edgelord character with no real loyalty to the party!" will eventually have her character either abandoned or killed by the rest of the group. And for reasons I'll never understand they'll both be surprised when it happens.
The first thing you as a player will want to do is read the Player's Handbook to get a general feel. There is a web series on Youtube called Handbooker Helper that you can watch as well. The cast of Critical Role runs through things from the PHB there. You can also watch other people play, there's plenty of groups either streaming or uploading to Youtube. Viva La Dirt League D&D's channel has a group of actors that had never played the game before. So the DM will occasionally explain rules to them and/or the audience.
Excellent...!! I'm checking that (the youtube) series out now....This seems like it could be a lot of fun...Just getting started....is a bit of a challenge...Thanks for your help....!!!! I just started..or joined discord...will that help...I'm lost there (on discord)...is that worth having..or no..?
Discord is a text, video and voice chat system that is very popular. But it all depends on which group you end up playing with. If it's text only they may not have any need for it. For example, Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds have their own built in text systems. Roll20 also has their own video & voice chat.

Yes, there are people from all age groups that play. D&D was first published in 1974. So next year will be its 50th "birthday".
