The first step to getting into playing D&D is to find a group, groups consist of a couple players (~2-5) and a DM (dungeon master). It is easier to find a pre existing group with a dm and some players who know each other well, as that will bring a lot of support and experience from the other players. Your other option is to create a group, and this option is NOT easy, the reason this can be tricky is because it means that you probably don’t have friends who already play, so finding interest can be tricky, but the second reason this can be difficult is due to the idea (and in general, truth) that people don’t really like to DM, so if you do create a group chances are you will have to DM. Interestingly, that’s the route I had to take!
So, if you are the DM then you could use some extra resources, but you don’t need them. If you’re gonna get some resources there are some beginner kits with a couple of adventures, monsters, and character rules.
If you are a player then your DM is probably handling the above information, all you need to do is make a character, and figure out how to play them in a fun engaging way (Voices? Quirks?)
The main thing is to not overthink it, it’s a game that you’re playing for fun and it really doesn’t have to be taken that seriously ;)
You want the Looking For Players and Groups forum. People post there if they are looking to join a game, or if they are looking for players to join theirs. Most of those games are online, but some are not.
You can also try to see if there is a game store near you. A lot of neighborhood game stores run D&D games. Local libraries also might do this, too.
