If you watch recent YouTube videos about Fifth Edition Revised and One D&D ( Jeremy Crawford has called it both) it is clear that 2014 and 2024 will run side by side. Crawford said you might play a game where there are two barbarians, one using the 2014 rules and the other using 2024.

That's a description of how 2024 books will purportedly be able to be work with 2014 (and all the years between) books. But there's been no statement as to whether there will be some sort of revised SRD that will render some content in the 2024 books available to all players, a la the Basic Rules. Whether the 2014 books will remain in print or on the DDB marketplace has not been clarified; but it's a reasonable inference that the 2014 PHB will go out of print, considered "legacy" material. More interesting to me is whether we'll receive a refreshed Basic Rules. But none of these questions have definite answers beyond what Davyd's put above, and I don't see anything being made definite until well into 2024 (but that too is just speculation).

Ensure the 2024 Core Rulebook Updates Are Compatible with Fifth Edition D&D and the SRD: We remain committed to keeping the rules updates compatible with the current fifth edition content and SRD, either by bringing the rules updates into the SRD, or by providing language that keeps them compatible.
Whether it's being called a new version or not, will there still be a way to filter out the new "versions" of the core books for those of us that don't want to use them? E.g. at the character creation first page or similar? Or will it be as simple as if we don't own the new books our user experience will be original 5th edition only?
I estimate that to an extent, yes — much how you can filter to use Volo’s, for example.
However, it will be legacy content not the default, and so you will always have to filter or get to it via Sources. The 2024 version is likely to be the new default for the entire site — so if you do not use the filter, it will not come up.

I know this is stating the obvious, but if you don't buy it you don't have to filter it out. Though if anyone in the campaign owns it then the filter is your friend.

So it's good that they've addressed or asserted an awareness that The Basic Rules will likely need some addressing; but that assertion of awareness by the Design Team noted in "either by brining the rules updates into the SRD, or by providing language that keeps them compatible," still leaves what the future will look like in limbo. Currently DDB makes available free to all users The Basic Rules, which are predicated on the SRD. Looking at the most recent One D&D Playtest, the classes alone (all of which I believe are on their second passes through the public playtest process, have not insignificant differences from the classes as they currently exist in The Basic Rules. So when the new PHB, goes live, presumably the Basic Rules here will most likely reflect the rules expression in that PHB. I guess it's possible you'll have 2024 and 2014 classes existing alongside each other in the SRD, but to do that in The Basic Rules, that would have an impact on the utility of The Basic Rules as an introduction to D&D. So will we have a live living version of The Basic Rules and a Legacy version accessible to users somehow? I don't have a vested take on what should be done, but I feel it's one of the more interesting questions as to how the upcoming rules refresh and current rules mesh in function but may be separated in presentation. The next year will be an interesting time for D&D, and I don't at all mean that pejoratively.

This may not be as obvious as it seems. Especially if they follow the expected legacy process with the core rules. because everything will be legacy, and as noted they plan to update the basic rules -- which means that if one doesn't buy the new books, the only rules you'll have access to without filtering are the basic rules -- you'll still have to dig for your older books, because they will be legacy.

While we have been told the new edition will be compatible with the 2014 edition there will need to be some way of coping with changes, for example if a party has a stars druid and a 2024 moon druid will their castings of conjure animals be totally different spells or will there be a way for the stars druid to cast the updated spell?
I hope there will be an option on DndBeyond to select between legacy spells and new spells when using a subclass from a source book from before 2024.
Sorry for the Necro, but I still haven't found an answer to this (seems like it must be a frequently-asked) question.
So, has this been answered yet?:
If I buy the 2024 books (I already own the 2014 versions), will my (and my players') existing characters "upgrade" to 5.5?
Not been answered so far as I'm aware, but I doubt they will be upgraded automatically. You'd have to go in to the character can change things.
Will I be able to add new 2014 characters to that campaign?
Presumably yes. You're supposed to be able to bring them to 2024e games...so almost certainly yes.
Will I be able to start a new 2014 campaign as well as a new 2024 campaign?
Presumably. Personally I don't think there'll be distinction. You'll just have 2014e characters and 2024e characters, and they get put into a campaign.
Sorry if this is answered someplace, but it definitely seems like an email or pinned post should have happened a long time ago.
Probably, but they've been tight lipped about how DDB will work. I feel like it's detrimental and they'd be much better of just communicating. WotC has issues with communicating though.

- Will there be an active toggle on Beyond to switch between 5e and 5.5 given they are compatible with each other?
- Will the 2014 Core books still be purchasable? I’m assuming at most they will be archived and labeled as legacy content.
- Will the newer 2024 version be locked behind a Paywall?
Im just guessing but
1: You will probably be able to toggle what content will be available to choose from in the character creator.
2: I think they will remove them from the marketplace at some point.
3: You will have to buy the new books to access the new conent. They might release Basic Rules for the new version at some point
This isn't D&D 5.5, it's still D&D 5th edition and fully compatible with all existing D&D products.
There has been no announcement about how content will be handled
There has been no announcement as to what will happen regarding 2014 core book availability
The 2024 revised core rulebooks will be new books with everything that entails.

The DM can pick which books are shared/used in the content sharing filter, right? It will probably be as easy as that.

As long as we don't lose access to the content we've already purchased. That would be absolutely unacceptable
There's nothing wrong or boring about being a Human Fighter with a Sword and Shield. It's all about HOW you play them, WHO they are, and WHAT they do!
