I’m not sure where to post this so hopefully this is ok and I can find an answer.
Im creating a half elf character using the character builder on dnd beyond, however I do not have the option to specify what type of elf blood I have, or therefor what versatility I can have, such as access to a cantrip if I am high elf. This is an option from the players handbook so I just wondered why it is not possible with a character made on the site of the players handbook is owned? It just gives you the general skill versatility allowing you to be proficient in two skills.
So, each of the half-elfs has a different option. There should be a drop down when you select half-elf.
Normal Half-elf (basic rules/Players Handbook) Mark of Detection (Eberron: Rising from the Last War) Mark of Storm (Eberron: Rising from the Last War) Aquatic Half Elf (Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide) Drow Half Elf (Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide) High Half Elf ((Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide) Wood Half Elf ((Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide)
So you would need to own/be in a campaign with content sharing with someone who ownes the specific books depending on which form of half-elf you want. Book names in ( )

The Half-Elf Variant is not from the Player's Handbook it's an optional rule from the Sword Coast Adventure Guide sourcebook.
Half-Elf Variants: Half-elves in Faerûn have the racial traits of half-elves in the Player’s Handbook, although some variations are possible; see the “Half-Elf Variants” sidebar. Some half-elves in Faerûn have a racial trait in place of the Skill Versatility trait. If your DM allows it, your half-elf character can forgo Skill Versatility and instead take a trait based on your elf parentage:

Ahhh thank you, I didn’t realise they were covered in those books, maybe I will take a look at them
thank you
You can also just buy only what you want instead of the whole book as well.
