Ranger in the Red boxed set just after Christmas 1983. I was 13 and it was a glorious time!
I don't remember rangers in the box set. It was cleric, thief, fighter, magic user (all human) or dwarf, elf, halfling (where your race was your class). Rangers were in AD&D. Though I also started with a box set in '83, so it's a bit hazy and I could be wrong.
To the OP, I was a fighter, which at the time meant a human.
You remember correctly.
Though I argue nowadays that all the classes were clearly separate species, because it'd be weird if only some of them were.
To be honest, I don't remember my first character, but I got a Bear compound bow and the box set in 1983 so it was all about the ranger life for me. Most likely it was an elf that I rolled up because they were the closest I could get at the time. It didn't matter, I had no one to play with for several decades after I had my first rules. In fact, I pretty much bought all the books without having a game to play in. My young self would be jealous of the amount of time I have played in weekly campaigns in my 40's and 50's. I consider it all good foundation work and investments well made. I still have my AD&D books, wish I had all the 3rd and 4th I traded in many years ago.

I didn’t mean it as a Gotcha, and I hope it didn’t come out that way. And while I made my friends play the red box with me, and later AD&D, my younger self would also be jealous of how much I get to play now. And that I’m old enough to just buy the books without begging my parents to take me to a bookstore. My younger self would also look at BG3 and then Pool of Radiance and be jealous of that, too.
Ninja! But it was from an old issue of Dragon magazine and completely broken lol
I played one of those and they were indeed pretty broken. Played a Dragon Magazine Monk and it was up there as well, though not as bad
Never thought I'd hear someone say monks were OP. Guess theres a first time for everything *shrug*. I actually like monks, I just wish their numbers were better.

Really depends on the version, in some editions Monks were very strong, as a consequence in some editions they were weakened. By and large I'm relatively happy where they've landed, though it can make for weird party dynamics when one person at the table is trying to live out their manga dreams and everyone else is living their medieval coming-of-age stories.
Mine was a Tiefling Wizard, which I picked for about 5 sessions, before the campaign ended prematurely, and I never got a decent experience for a while, until more recently.

True. I'm a 5e native, so I'm used to monks having mediocre numbers. It also depends on the game, from what I've heard, PF 2 monks are really cool. In general PF martials are cooler than they are in 5e, fighter especially.

This was around 1982 or so - Basic D&D, a magic-user with 4 hit points and one magic missile per day!
