My apologies, I'm sure this has been answered somewhere in a thread but I couldn't find it. I rarely read these forums and do a lot of my gaming through Foundry using beyond 20. I've been a D&D Beyond supporter since the beginning and I own 80% of the books here on the site and at least half of them in physical form too. When they release the updated 2024 version later this year is that a new purchase? and I'll have both books on my account here or will it just update my books because I already own them?
Also is that what they are calling D&D One? I've heard One referred to as 5.5. Or is there still a One coming after the 2024 update?
It will be a new purchase. What it’s called, officially, I’m honestly not sure, it might just still be D&D 5e. The 1D&D name was a placeholder during the playtest for the 2024 update. In one of the videos, they said internally, they’re calling it 2014 vs 2024. What they land on officially we’ll see. They’ve got 6 months to change their minds. Things like 5.5e, or 5.x, or some people swear it’s 6, since people like to give it lots of different numbers, is more just an unofficial way the community refers to it. But its all the same rules update.
Whatever you call it, the PHB is due out September 17, Or September 3, if you pre-order at your FLGS.
For frame of reference, the upcoming updates to the core books are more like how Mord's Monsters of the Multiverse updated Volo's and Mord's Tome of Foes. They have similar functions, but are really different books, and consequently additional purchases. I think how Pathfinder 2e recently updated, and continues to update, its core is a pretty good example of what we'll be seeing.
