I have a DNDBeyond Master Account. I pre-ordered the books. I'm attending GenCon. And I'm literally running games at GenCon. And because of the timing, there is no chance I can every make a purchase of the PHB. And I'll still have to wait a month before getting access to something I've 1) preordered and 2) have early access to.
I don't need the GenCon book. Fine. I realize they had to make it so people running games couldn't buy it because of the times they selected were prime game running time. That players could just skip out or maybe show up late to a game, but whatever. I'm running the games so I'll be there. But I'd like to at least have digital access to the book. That seems like such a reasonable request so that I can actually start preparing to run games with it.
WotC is working hard to make me regret buying into D&D 2024.
If you preordered the books why are you concerned about getting them at GenCon? Also, are you running official games for WotC or are these just games you're running on your own?

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Can you get a friend who doesn't want the book to go through the process for you?
Also, with 750 books per day, and probably at least 10,000 impatient players and people hoping to flip the book on eBay trying, the odds of you getting a book are pretty low.
You're already getting two-week early access for preordering and having a master account. Given the relatively low amount of rule changes (as opposed to class changes), that seems to me to be plenty of time for getting ready to run with the new rules. Doesn't mean you can't want the book early, but you don't need it. (And your players likely won't be ready to play new rules day one, anyway.)
Yeah, I don't see any reason to complain. I know when I'm getting the book and I can wait. This is good marketing and will cause a full booth at Gen Con
In this thread, people reading the title and that’s it. I was asking that the digital copies be released at the same time. Not sure why all the other questions that are unrelated.

Yeah, it blows. Honestly I have no idea why they're doing this. All it's going to do is absolutely ensure that the PHB contents hit the internet on August 2nd. You would think that there was a program for those running official games at the con as a thank you to get it with a potential NDA until drop date but that would be kind and thoughtful.

Why do you care? The digital release was shown on or before the date when it became available for sale. The fact that companies regularly put small amounts of new books for sale at GenCon before they're released to the general public is a decades-old tradition that shouldn't take anyone by surprise unless they're completely new to gaming. What is your issue with the idea that a few hundred people who stood in line, probably for hours, are going to get the book before you do?

I checked and GenCon 4-day, Friday and Saturday passes are all sold out 😭I had convinced myself earlier in the year that they'd never have the final PHB ready in time for it. Curses!

He outlined why he cared. He is doing something at GenCon for GenCon, and due the timing of it he cannot participate in something being offered by GenCon that directly relates to the thing he is doing for GenCon.
He just wanted the chance, but because of the timing, he can't. He's miffed at that.

tl;dr: This selection is what I replied to.
You bought a retail offer. After the fact, WotC offered something else you couldn't factor in at the time of your initial purchase. Now you want to change the terms of the purchase you did make. I understand, but you've created a situation to be upset with instead of rolling with your stated truth about not needing it.
Yeah, you'd like your digital copy before Gen Con. I'd like mine today. As a DM who's run events at conventions, it's incredibly unlikely the fun adventures you have planned were contingent on the digital release happening sooner than the purchase offer indicated. Run your games as planned. Have a great time being the great DM that you are! Make others happy with your event. Isn't that why we all do this? Shared fun!

And as I pointed out in my first post, none of that means that he's getting the books any later than he thought he would be or that he's somehow being cheated of anything. It was his decision to run those games, he wasn't forced to do so. He's still getting a good deal, the fact that some people are going to get the books slightly sooner than he will doesn't harm him.

People are still entitled to feel the way they want. You can be objectively correct, and that doesn't excuse their feelings or change their perception on why they feel that way.

Important lesson to learn in life.
And it's also an important life lesson to learn that just because you're upset about something doesn't mean you're being mistreated.

Sooo...let's say you get a digital copy of the PHB on the day of GenCon.
Where does that put you? Your players show up and none of them have the new rules, only you. Are you going to waste hours of your event time explaining or showing how so many of the classes are new and how they now work?
