I tend not to buy the entire book but the pieces I need or will use.
Or at least I used to. Either I'm doing something wrong, or you can't do that anymore.
You are correct in that you cannot do that anymore. You will have to buy full books, leverage your friendships with those who have (a great option to play D&D AND get the content), or homebrew.
