Will we be able to upgrade a running campaign from 2014 to 2024 rules? I have currently two long-term campaign with characters built with 2014 rules. Do you know anything about character upgrading? Will I be able to choose to play with 2024 rules or I have to wait the fresh start of a new campaign?
No idea if there will be a conversion tool for existing characters, but if not, you could remake the characters.
To echo on this, literally nothing on D&D Beyond has been announced on how 2014 and 2024 will act by itself or interact with each other. Based on the tagging of certain assets with 2014? You have to imagine there is no interaction or "upgrade". The intent is that 2014 characters are 2014 characters while 2024 characters are 2024, and you can infer from the Crawford videos that they "really" don't want you to mix and co-mingle but you can if you really want to.
To echo NijayDaevas point, with how we've seen "legacy" species work? It isn't an upgrade as it would be a rebuild in that instance, and I have to guess it'd be the same there.
They've said there will be rules in the books how to use 2014 characters with the 2024 rules. We havent seen them yet though.
They've said there will be rules on how to convert 2014 subclasses to 2024 classes in the event the PHB doesn't have those. They've said flat out if you are playing a 2014 character in spaces with 2024 characters, you're just using the 2024 rules to do it. Your character will function on your sheet as your character does, but everything else will exist in the 2024 space.
If you are playing a class/subclass that will be in the 2024 PHB I would probably allow players to remake their characters in the builder with the updated classes. I would say, if they give some advice on handling subclasses that come online at 1st or 2nd level to convert to 3rd level start I would use those rules. Or just keep playing the 2014+ class/subclass while using the 2024 rules.
In the 2014 rules, ability score increases came from a character’s race/species and in 2024 they come from their background … I’m curious how this will be handled for those who want to convert characters from 2014 to 2024 rules. A conversion guide in the rules would be helpful, but a tool or simple way to do this in D&D Beyond would be even better. While some of the players in my campaign will love the idea of re-spec’ing their beloved 2014 character to 2024, others will loathe it. An “easy” button for them to do the conversion would be perfect.

I don’t think that could happen. Too many variables. Like if you took VHuman as your race. And took Polearm master or any other feat that is now 4th level required, is it just going to randomly pick a background feat?
If you already have a character it shouldn’t be that hard to remake in the builder (that’s about as easy a button you will get). Plug in your species, ability scores, background, and class you already chose and the builder will prompt for the rest. Fill in your inventory with any new items you have and spells for spellcaster and that’s pretty much it, I would think.
