Chapter 5, page 201 provides more information on Magic Initiate by saying "You gain the following benefits. Two Cantrips. You learn two cantrips of your choice from Cleric, Druid, or Wizard spell list."
At face value, my initial interpretation told me that since my character is a Druid, I am the only class that gets this Feat (step 3). Also, I have the opportunity to choose two cantrips from the Cleric, Druid, or Wizard spell list (Step 5). Since it seems vague about this, I re-created my character in the DNDBeyond creator system. It confirmed that Druids can select two additional cantrips from just the Druid spell list, not Cleric or Wizard. In retrospect, it makes sense, but I think the wording could have been better or included an additional sentence indicating this restriction.
Anyone can take Magic initiate and when you take it you can decide to choose from the cleric, Druid, or wizard list. When the background you took gave you MI (Druid) it was the Druid option so you choose from the Druid list. Not related to your class. If you took Acolyte background you would have received the cleric option and could choose from the cleric list.
If you chose Magic Initiate at level 4 you would have been able to choose. Backgrounds have it chosen for you.

Technically the backgrounds limit which version of magic initiate you can take. Guide specifically states you must take Magic Initiate (Druid).

Just a small rant.
Anyone who chooses the background Guide gets the feat "Magic Initiate (Druid)". You do not get to select which magic initiate you want as the background restricts you to Magic Initiate (Druid). If you wanted a different magic initiate, you would need to chose a different background. Fore example, Sage lets you choose the Magic Initiate (Wizard). So basically you don't get to decide between Wizard, druid, or cleric when you select a background, as the background selects for you. If you take the feat in any other way besides from a background, you can select wizard, druid, or cleric.
