I'm a pretty new player ( 1 year in d&d) and a novice in what can be done or not... We have a friendly discussion on with our group. We all use the app, and I started a new character. I have both player handbooks 2014 and 2024. Can I play with a character made with the 2024 rules AND that the DM still use the 2014 version.
Given the 2024 DMG (Dungeon Master's Guide) isn't even out yet, there is currently not another way to even use the 2024 PHB. But no idea what trouble you think you'd get into. The books only guide players (including DM) on how to play the game, it is down to the group (primarily the DM) on how the game is played at your table.
Apparently you'll have friction trying to play 2024e characters with 2014e rules, although I haven't seen where that would happen (disclaimer: I haven't thoroughly read everything yet in the 2024e rules). It's also worth noting that 2024e characters are generally stronger than 2014e ones, so if everyone's characters are from 2014e, your 2024e character will likely be better.
The character will work...but it may cause table issues.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.

I think the big issue is there’s terms in ‘24 which are not defined in ‘14. So if your ‘24 character has, for example, an emanation, the ‘14 rules won’t know what to do with that.
It’s not a really complex one to deal with, as it’s mostly just a new word to describe the same mechanic. That’s just the first example that popped into my head.

Will this get us in trouble ?
Typically all the DMG does is clarify or even expound on a few things in the PHB. I doubt you will find much of anything different from the 2014 DMG and 2024, so you are good.
All our players are on the 2024 release with the app, it's just our dm that like to play further in 2014 as he invested in the books a good year ago, which is of course understandable. I just wanted to be a bit sure we wouldn't encounter major problems :).
We will give it a try soon :)
