Greetings! New to this whole thing so Im a bit confused.
To have access to the rules and features from the core rulebooks for 5e do I have to purchase them in Role20 -AND- DNDBeyond? For instance, I don't have the ability to drag and drop from the Monster Manual for tokens if I dont have the MM in Roll20, but I cant choose a fighter subclass in DnDB if I dont have the PHB in DnDB...
So... do I need to drop 200 bucks to buy all 3 books in digital format, twice? Just wanna know.
***** is, I just bought the physical copies 2 weeks ago for an in person game...
Unfortunately yes you do. Roll20 and D&D Beyond are two separate businesses offering two separate services so in order to use both you need to buy both their products
Sort of yes, sort of no. Short answer: Where you bought the source(books) can only be used there, and are not shared/reflected to the other site.
DNDB is (albeit riddled with bugs atm) building up their own Virtual Table Top field, through its own tools. MAPS, ENCOUNTERS, and it has its own CHARACTER BUILDER. And soon-ish-ish, if you want a 3d-esque experience, SIGIL the 3d VTT.
Roll 20 has that relatively easy learning curve if you have the patience to go through its whole tutorial. But things you buy there only stays there, can't be used elsewhere.
DNDB, if you paid for the digital books already, lets you use them same sources for their own tools, which you can learn too. (also can only be used for DNDB site, etc). There's currently FREE RULES 2024 on DNDB that gives you the limited options to try across its tools. Buying stuff on DNDB can be seen as for your convenience, since you can HOMEBREW most options if you have the patience to code it yourself.
If you haven't checked it yet, MAPS has progressed into Beta (It's been in Alpha for years, lol). MAPS might already have the options you want or already are experiencing from roll20. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy_eq4Lv86w
