Hey guys. I was looking at the wizard spells, and I noticed silent image was redundant. It costs a 1st level spell slot, while minor illusion can be cast at will. Also, an illusion wizard can have minor illusion have both sound and an object. The only difference I see is that you spend a 1st level spell slot to make a slightly bigger illusion that can move. Is there something I’m missing, or is it just not worth it. If it is worth it, please state some uses. Thank you.
It isn't redundant, even for an Illusionist Wizard. Minor Illusion, while a great cantrip, only provides you with Sound or an Object (or both for an Illusionist). It is important to note that this image created by Minor Illusion doesn't move in a natural manner with its surroundings. It is a mannequin standing stationary.
While Silent Image allows for natural, fluid movement of the illusion. Such as a man running across an opening and diving behind a barrel (no sound, though). Even an Illusionist's Malleable Illusion wouldn't produce that fluid movement within Minor Illusion since it just allows you to change the nature of the spell within the restrictions of that spell's description. Meaning Malleable Illusion would only unnaturally move the Minor Illusion to a new location.
Both Silent Image and Minor Illusion have their strengths and weaknesses.
Minor Illusion is free to cast, requires no verbal component (great for those moments you need to be quiet), requires no concentration (very important to remember as you can concentrate on another spell while it’s running) and can produce sounds from a whisper to a roar. That said, it is a completely static object with only a five foot cube area and only a one minute duration.
Silent Image is 15 cubic feet of area, can move (and look natural doing so) and can be maintained (with concentration) for up to 10 minutes. However, it does cost a spell slot to cast (there are exceptions like the Warlock invocation that lets you cast it an unlimited number of times for free), makes no sound and does require concentration to maintain (meaning you can’t concentrate on any other spell while this is running).
Both have their uses, and both are valuable additions to your spell repertoire. Take note that, since Minor Illusion does not require concentration, you can use it in conjunction with Silent Image to provide a sound element to your illusion (but since casting the cantrip is an action you won’t be able to control your Silent Image on that round).
