It was an illustrative example to make the point that it doesn't have any "understanding of the rules". If you're relying on ChatGPT to mediate the rules, you're going to have problems.
If you can personally mediate the rules, then you just have all of ChatGPT's other flaws and ethical issues to deal with.
That's precisely the opposite of my experience. It's pretty good on the rules, but kinda weak on everything else. It needs lengthy and detailed instructions on how to actually do everything else - but combat it can do just fine. I mean ... fine-ish. Of course, I haven't been pushing for failure, but helping with success
Which again makes the point that if you have to carry it the entire way, it’s basically the same as just doing it all yourself. What we call “AI” in this context is simply not capable of functioning without constant prompting, so it doesn’t really seem viable as a replacement DM.
Yeah AI is great for helping you elaborate or simplify a backstory, or describing stuff if you’re not very eloquent IRL.
But when it comes to having interconnected ideas, especially from different people at the same time, it just can’t compete with even an inexperienced human dm.
