I'm coming to the realization that I'm not willing to pay much for just the content. I actually don't care that much about having digital access to books, etc. on their own. I'd probably pay a little bit, because it would take up less room at the table than a stack of book, so long as it was done extremely well. I honestly wouldn't even pay much for an "official" character sheet/creator/manager. I already have access to multiple PDFs of varying degrees of automation. Many of them are extremely nice looking and easy to use. Even if there were zero automation (due to, say, zealous enforcement of IP), my favorites would still more than meet my needs.
No matter how much content and how any characters I can create, I don't see me paying more than $5/month for DnD Beyond. That level of support isn't really "beyond" anything. It's more of a "DnD meets expectations". Home brew content would be great, but not a huge game changer -- if all that's offered is a Compendium and Character Manager.
What I'm really hoping for, and willing to pay for, is a fully integrated campaign management suite of tools: compendium, character management, encounter management, campaign wiki, etc. I don't really care about Fantasy Grounds style online gaming, though a nice play-by-post message board might get my interest. If I can get that sort of tool set, I would potentially pay $10-15/month plus one-off purchasing of content for the Compendium.
Actually, come to think of it, if the main selling point of DnD Beyond is the Compendium, then I want the app to be free with one-time purchase for content. If the Character Manager is part of it, then I'd be will to pay a small price for the app -- say, $5 per platform, tops.
Just a heads up, the compendium is by no means the main selling point - the open beta for DDB is split into three phases. The compendium you see now is only the first one with character sheets/builder incoming in the second phase, followed by campaign management and homebrew in the third.
I think you might benefit from reading through the quotes linked in my signature. There are more details there in regards to what will be available free as well as future features they intend to implement.
For the first question, let's assume that, based on the FAQ, the subscription will include no additional official content other than what's officially available for free now. In other words, let's assume it will only offer:
more character save slots
access to homebrew content
gathering some of the available information in custom lists (such as a custom list of monsters or spells)
access to free official content, including unearthed arcana content
Assume that you could pay separately (at a price that has not been determined) a one-time fee for content that you wanted to purchase. Past WotC behavior indicates that this will probably be the full print cover for those publications, but they might also make some cheaper options for a single class (but without magic items that might relate to that class). What's the most you would you pay, per month, for that?
For the second question, assume the above, but assume that ALL official content was also included in the subscription. What's the most you would you pay if the subscription included all official content?
I would want full access for $5-10/month. If it costs more than Netflix, they're doing it wrong.
I hope that there are no issues with players not being able to use content related to their DM because the DM paid for something and the player didn't. This is always a burden, but if there is a possibility of this, I sure hope that there are "DM" versions of licenses which allows you to share with any of your players regardless of whether they pay.
I'd still be interested in a one time "ultimate" license that one pays and then forever has full access. And, related to #1, an ultimate "DM" license would be great. I think you'll find that, if you have a good product, that some of us would be more than willing to pay a one time large fee to get everything and then have access for the lifetime of the service.
From developer quotes, they mention "What I can confirm (as I have before) is that there will be a subscription offering and ways to buy official content without a subscription." -- It would be nice that if you purchase a subscription, that you then forever gain license to any 'new' content that is released during your subscription. Where I've seen this before, it would not include any content released before you started to subscribe.
I would echo what others have quantified, this shouldn't cost more than $10/month. That's basically in line with many other subscription types of services online. But, I'd think that $5 would get you a ton of people willing to subscribe and forget. I mean, seriously, that's only a single venti latte now.
Annual discounts would be appreciated if there is no way to do #2
What I hope you don't do is basically the entire model which Realm Works uses that is a little pricy for some people and then requires that you continue to subscribe for cloud service, or else never be able to use your product again (which is a little bit of an exaggerated statement, but essentially it seems that way).
For examples of where I get some of these ideas, look to Fantasy Grounds for ideas #1 and #2 and for Syrinscape for #3.

Be careful what you Wish for... your DM may just give it to you!
Just a thought, how about two levels? For players, $5/month for all PC related materials and for DM's, $10/month for all DM "only" materials such as the DMG and the Monster Manual?
There is no such thing as "DM only" materials outside of adventure plans.
Further, segregating materials like that adds a perceived obstacle between being a player and being a DM, which is a thing that should be avoided for the good of the hobby in general; we should be finding ways to enable and encourage more folks to DM, not aiding in the illusion that someone has to be a unicorn (by which I mean a rarity with special qualities) to be a DM.
Considering that there is a tab called "my subscriptions", there is most definitely going to be some sort of subscription. I'd pay a few bucks a month for their cloud storage but i wouldn't subscribe for content. I'd rather just pay for that type of stuff up front.

Hey Greg, the 'My Subscriptions' item in your profile menu are for threads / articles / PMs, etc., that you are subscribed to in order to receive notifications.
After reading some responses and thinking about it, I have changed my mind on what I personally am willing to pay.
Like someone else said, the compendium of data is great but not the big deal for me. I am very eager to see stage 2 and stage 3, as it is the character creation/management and the campaign management I am truly interested in. I really would love the following features:
Easy character creation/management with step-by-step level up process (similar, and hopefully better, than Fight Club 5), with good inventory management that can aid players in tracking their carrying weight, and their spell components. OH if this app could track Spell Components, and automatically remove those consumed when a spell is cast...and even tell the player "you don't have components for that" when they try to cast a spell...I would LOVE that. It's little details like that which are often ignored in games. Also tracking things like lay on hands, or resetting stuff after long/short/full rest, etc. Status effects, etc.
Encounter management that allows tracking of HP/AC, status effects, rounds, initiative, etc. This one is key. I'd really love something that can help me track combat, and keep track of both my monster's and my players and my NPCs health, status effects, and even temporary spell effects that last x rounds. It would be awesome if it was very automated, so it tells me whose turn it is, and when a new round starts, and reminds me of status effects.
It may be asking too much, but some kind of map creation tools would be awesome. Like the dungeon tile packs you can get now, I'd really like to be able to get virtual versions of those, and build out dungeons, towns and other homebrew maps with this. (this may be what Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds is like, I've never used them). It would also be great if when new campaigns come out, the maps and such from the books and everything could be available digitally.
A good note taking system. It is one of the things I dislike about my current go-to app (Fight Club 5) because there just isn't a really good way to take lots and lots of notes. I am a player (and a DM) who loves taking notes during every session. The names of NPCs I run into, the names of towns or cities, things like that. And as a DM I like to make note of choices characters have made, things they've said, and ideas for things.
A dice roller. I honestly prefer rolling real dice and probably wouldn't use this feature myself (I also love collecting unique and interesting dice) but it would be a nice feature to have.
I do like the compendium and being up to look up things. It may not be the biggest deal for me, but I do want it and would use it.
For the above few things, the things I personally want most, I would stick by my $15 a month. I love my electronics. Right now my iPad Pro is my life. I do digital artwork on it, I write my short stories and am working on a novel on it. I play the occasional mobile game on it (Elder Scrolls: Legends my current favorite). I bring it everywhere. If I were able to go to D&D either as a player or a DM with my iPad and a bag of dice, and be perfectly capable of running a campaign or playing I would be in heaven. I love my books but I hate lugging them around. I would GLADLY pay for an app that means I can leave my books at home. I'll probably still buy them, because I love them and I love the artwork and the details and just the fact of having them.
ALL that said. If the app doesn't really have all the features I want, and doesn't really work for me... well naturally I probably wouldn't bother with it. I'd also only pay that $15 for EVERYTHING. I do NOT want to pay $15 and then have to pay extra money in addition to that to get other stuff. I think $15 should come with compedium, character creation/management, campaign management, homebrew management, and at least 8-10 character slots. If it doesn't than I probably won't pay for it.
I do actually also like the idea of paying for a single class. I wont ever use it, but I have a couple players who would. I also wouldn't be opposed to at least 2 levels of accounts. DM account which has all the things I talk about above for $15 a month, and player account which maybe just has the compendium (phase 1) and the character creation/management (phase 2) for maybe like $10 a month.
I personally would prefer a subscription to having to pay for each new content.
Oh, one last thing. ALL of this hinges on being able to access this OFFLINE. Where I play there is no internet. If this ends up being entirely web based or requires internet access that is a deal breaker for me simply because I just wont be able to use it, period. So I really really hope that this comes out as a full-fledged app that you download and it has all the information and tools, only requiring internet to update it as new content and fixes/updates are released.
I also realized by the time I got to the end of this novel I just typed, that I didn't actually change the amount I was willing to pay, I just changed the level of content I'd require in order to be willing to pay that much.

Be sure to leave this feedback in the survey - It'll help a lot to focus the staff in future development!
The thing about subscriptions, for me, is that why would I subscribe to a character builder if I have to pay more money to access digital versions of information I already have in hardcover form? I'm dropping ~$60 a book for the hardcover, but if I wanted to use D&D Beyond to make a character, I might have to subscribe to get the same content I already own, which raises the question, "Why did I drop $60 on a hardcover when I could pay between $3-10 dollars a month for the same thing?"
There is no such thing as "DM only" materials outside of adventure plans.

I'm enjoying not knowing everything about the opponents that my DM is throwing at us though. It's more fun learning bits and pieces as my character learns them than it is knowing, for example, that goblins have Disengage as a bonus action at the beginning of the encounter with them. Some players like to know all of the details of the monsters, etc. but I'm enjoying not knowing them far more than I did when I knew them in 2nd Edition!

That has nothing to do with whether the material is locked behind a "DM-only" signage/price, and everything to do with you choosing not to read the monster entries.
I've got players that don't know the class features of any class that they haven't played - but that doesn't make me think players should have to pay for every class separately in order to have it be their option to read them or not.
I am not willing to pay a repeating fee for anything, under any circumstances. If this requires a monthly fee, or an annual fee, or any other repeating fee, I will do without it. Also, if I buy content through this, I want to be able to download and print that content; likewise, if I buy a physical product, I want to be able to use it on here.

THE POINT OF THIS POST: The idea of this site is really cool. However, I do struggle to find good reasons to use all it can offer. I personally feel like convenience should be its goal.
POINT 1: Like most people, our group is willing to pay more for physical book copies because it is nice to hold what you own. So the new subscription idea of full access needs to have a low enough and provide enough content to persuade people to switch from physical to digital subscription. IF people are currently using physical books, paying that same price again for already free online digital content (via other sites) and then having to pay more for additional character space and sharing tools is a kick in the face. Even IF you are not buying printed books, digital books need to be cheaper if you require people to spend more for further website tools so the cost at least evens out. As of now, it cost more to use your site than it does to do the same thing in person. Yes, I know some people play online only, but there are better sites for online only play.
POINT 2: Currently you can share your content via subscription, but one person is not likely to have everything. So the subscription makes little sense unless one person has dropped $300-$500 to buy it all. Depending on your rules and number of campaigns you run, just owning pieces of this and that is not enough to meet the needs of everyone in an experienced group (or a mix of experience). If you cannot meet their needs, they simply won't use your profile even if you offer to share.
POINT 3: Capped character slots in general for this site really makes little sense. People come here for the convenience of using content and character building in one location. We know the workaround, printing sheets and deleting characters, or just creating another profile to try the base character set and save room on your paid content profile, but that doesn't help the site. If I have to print stuff off because there is not enough room for all my characters, why am I even here? The point is to have them all saved in one location. I can just use free online content if I'm going to print it off and delete the digital copy. So by giving more free slots, you are encouraging people to use the cool tools your site has to offer, which in turn drives up content buying. And content buying is far more profitable than that $2.99 subscription.
ENDING COMMENTS: If you try a subscription model with ALL CONTENT AVAILABLE, a lower cost of entry is going to create the longevity. If you want to sell books at full price with no subscription, make the rest of your tools and group benefits free. People can't fully use your tools if they don't own the books, and they won't buy the books if they can't fully use your tools.
I know plenty of people that think this site is cool. It is a great idea. But nobody I know wants to use it because those inconveniences and the cost/benefit for the tools isn't quite there.
Aside from this being necroposting from two years ago, let me see if I can help clear up a couple of things:
Point 1: those "other websites" are offering the content in an illegal fashion, therefore using them you are technically breaking the law, aside from the fact that said websites/applications/whatnot could disappear from one day to the next. The cost of the content here IS cheaper than the physical books at you LFGS (IIRC something around 25/30% cheaper), and there are enough codes going around that the cost is further reduced, making them cheaper than even the Amazon alternative. Furthermore, the option to just buy what you might really need (specific class/race/feat/spell etc.) is a nice commodity not found anywhere else.
Point 2: MANY people, especially DMs do own everything here in DDB, but aside from that, let me point out that content sharing is a multi-way street: the content owned by EVERYONE in the same campaign with content share active is shared to EVERYONE else in that campaign, meaning that if you own the PHB and I own XGtE and we are in the same content share campaign we both have access to both the PHB and XGtE.
Point 3: $2.99 a month does not seem to me like such a steep price, but I do agree here that the option to one-buy additional slots would be preferable.
Ending Comments: the tools ARE perfectly usable without buying a single thing from the marketplace, and with them (and investing some time) one could technically recreate for personal use (and shared use with people in their campaigns, this without need for a subscription) EVERYRHING from published manuals, from races, to subclasses, backgrounds, feats etc. and in the near-ish future even full base classes. All of it without paying a penny and all of it perfectly within the law and guidelines of the webspace.
To conclude: you look genuinely interested in DDB, but you seem (pardon me if I am incorrect) at least somewhat misinformed. Hope my replies can help make things a bit clearer.
P.S. Also, don't necropost, it's against the forum rules
