We have updated Phase 1 of the DDB beta with the new Characters section (Races, Classes, Backgrounds, and Feats), as well as incorporating the remainder of the Basic Rules into the Compendium section.
You will now see the entirety of both the Basic Rules and the Systems Reference Document (SRD) together in one place!
I also want to make it very clear that what you currently see and can use in the beta will remain free going forward.
Feedback
We also need your help with feedback about the beta so far and (importantly) what matters most to you in D&D Beyond's future. The short survey is embedded below.
Characters Section
You can see a new button in the main nav called 'Characters.'
Keep in mind that the entries currently include Basic Rules/ SRD content only. If you can't find a drow (because everyone wants to be Drizzt), it's because that subrace is not included in the Basic Rules or SRD.
Compendium Update
The Compendium has been reorganized into chapters as seen in the Basic Rules, and a good bit of content has been added.
We have poured over all the feedback we have received in the last couple of weeks to confirm some of our guesses, so a few more updates will come for this phase soon.
Your feedback is very important - please share some more below!
The locked icon still seems to appear over phase 2 on the home screen
To be clear, this is not the start of Phase 2. This is the inclusion of Races, Classes, Backgrounds, and Feats listings, as well as Basic Rules (SRD). This release is only adding more content, not granting Phase 2 access.
What was the reasoning behind releasing the class section incomplete? There's just one subclass available for each (Cleric Domain, Warlock Patron, Bard College etc.)
Also, will it be updated to include races found in additional books like Volo's?
As with everything that will appear in beta, only the SRD is available. Everything else will appear at release.

And only one feat? Seems pointless to launch that section incomplete, so I'm curious.

I assume that it won't be the case, but I really hope that the limited access to basic info is because this was just released, and not because it's not going to be a free feature.
If it's not a free feature to see all the archetypes, or to see all the feats... well, that'd be a silly way to go about it. It's like getting half a plate of each plate on a 3 course meal, when it would make a lot more sense to just not give a 3 course meal, but give a 1 course meal with a full plate.
Keep in mind, I'm likely going to purchase whatever it is that is ultimately up for purchase, it's just about the strategy being employed. Again, I'm assuming it's because you guys want to roll out content slowly, and not because you plan to keep some character info paid, while other parts are free, but just in case I'm wrong, I figured it was worth mentioning.

The staff does not determine what is offered for free, or what is/is not included in the payment model. Per licencing, ONLY "Basic Rules (SRD)" content will be available for free. The developers are working to combine all available free content here into the beta as available, but this takes time. This can be expected, as this remains just that - the beta. Come release, one would be able to expect to see full Basic Rules (SRD) content, as well as subscription-based rule book content.
Again, the staff here is not picking and choosing in order to merely "give you a taste". Things are rolling out as finished, according to what is allowed to be freely distributed.
As it has been said, only the free D&D 5e content will be available during the beta - that means the Basic Rules & SRD. There is only one feat included in those, and so there is only feat available to view at this point in time. There are also limited subraces and archetypes, as those are only usually available in paid content such as the Player's Handbook among others. However, Dungeons & Dragons Beyond will offer ways to access all official content at its release.
This is a beta to give you guys an early peek at what they're developing and help them improve it should you have the time to share your feedback, on either the form here or over the forums in general. Everything and anything is appreciated.
Stay tuned for Phase 2, where a whole character builder system will be implemented. This is just an update to Phase 1, revealing more of the Compendium - the foundation on which the rest of the features are being built.
You can find various helpful links in my signature, whether its a specific place to give your thoughts on a beta topic (and the developers have been extremely active, reading everything there even if it doesn't receive a specific response) or the quotes where a great deal has already been clarified.
I hope this helps clear things up. Enjoy the progressing beta and thank you all for visiting and your feedback,

Okay, thanks, I thought it was weird that they had added some character parts but not the builder, that makes sense
