So it was asked how many Short Rests can you take in one game day. So we all know you can take a long rest 1 time then have to wait 16 hours before you can take another long rest.
So there is 16 hours. A short rest is 1 hour.
I am asking for all your opinions! There definitely needs to be a limit here.
Typically, I'll suggest one once per day. However, they're free to request more. The drawback is that the world doesn't pause - their enemies might be resting. Or searching for them. Or doing other productive things. I generally don't punish them for taking more though - just natural consequences for taking them.

Eh, that’s a bit harsh as a hard and fast approach. There’s not really a good answer because it depends a lot on the present circumstances- if you’re dungeon crawling through a cave network or old ruins there’s not necessarily going to be any kind of organized watch or other setup that would take note of your prior progress. Now, when you’re storming a castle it’s hard to justify putting up your shoes for an hour after every fight, but honestly a DM could build several rest points into the narrative- assaulting a large fortified position is something that can happen in stages as the aggressor breaks through each layer of defenses and then has to marshal their forces for the next push. This is one of those things that simply calls for a DM’s judgement and communication between the players and DM about expectations and current circumstances.
Well it takes an hour and the characters already do other things throughout the day, so it depends on what they're up to. I guess technically they could short rest a few times, but it would simply waste time and I wouldn't allow having like multiple short rests back to back without doing anything substantial (and again it might waste time with whatever time sensitive thing they might be doing)
I think 2 or 3 because of if you will “lunch”. And more small breaks. This is why the warlock can be op.
How many short rests would a Warlock need to be considered OP?
More than you can fit into a typical adventuring day
No, let’s see, a level 5 warlock has 2 3rd level spell slots, if you take 2 short rest a day that’s 9 3rd level spell slots, also, warlocks have many other abilities that allow to do other stuff then spell casting.
The only time short rests become a problem is if you allow taking consecutive rests (with no intervening adventuring); as long as you require significant (resource-depleting) activity between rests, you're unlikely to manage more than 1-3 short rests in a day anyway.

Huh?
You start with 2. Let’s assume you cast them both, then get 2 more and 2 more after that. That’s 6, not 9. Where is 9 coming from?
And to answer the OP, we have a house rule of no more than 2/day, but it’s never actually come up where we would have wanted a 3rd.

With '24 Magical Cunning can refresh 1 additional slot at some point during the day on a 5th level Warlock, so it'd be 7. Not sure where the other 2 are coming from, unless they meant to say 3 rests or thought it works more than once per day- it doesn't.
I typically only see 1 short rest each day sometimes you get 2, it is highly rare to see 3. This is why Warlocks are inconsistent in their daily power, but very consistent in their per encounter powers which is nice same with other martials like fighters and monks.
I allow as many short rests as the party has time for. If they can find a space to take a safe, 1 hour break, they can. How many they actually take will depend on the party; if there's a monk monk for example, I'll usually see a short rest after every fight or every other fight. If there's no character that has a solid short rest reset mechanic, there'll be fewer.

Yah idk we’re the 9 came from, lol I am losing my brain, aka mind flayers got me. But back to short rests, you just allow as many short rests the party wants, but my opinion is at least 1 short rest,

My thought is 2 short and 1 long rest a day.
Depends on the Setting.
If there es enough time and security in the enviroment 1 Short Rest is ok.
I would grad a second one only with other penalties involved. More enemys for example, because they had also time to prepare.

Yes, role playing is key to DnD.

Still 2 short rest a day seems fine but it is truly up to the pcs.
