So whenever i see a magical weapon as loot i tend to look at the weapon type and change it if none of the party are ever likely to use it, especially if its helpful in the plot. So I changed the Greatsword Giant Slayer in G1 to Battle Axe. Then the party found it. And the fighter has Weapon Mastery in Battle Axe. My logic is giants are screwed in this case. Mastery in topple makes them do a con save vs prone and the weapon makes them make a str save vs prone. i am playing it so both are rolled if the fighter hits. Some might see this as overkill but i want to see what chaos dropping prone on ice can do to the party when a frost giant fails ... :) Wont happen that often given giant str/con saves but will be nice flavour.
Hitting a Giant with a Giant Slayer Battleaxe and Topple Mastery means it takes an extra 2d6 damage of the weapon’s type and must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or have the Prone condition. You can force it to make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 plus the ability modifier used to make the attack roll and your Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the creature has the Prone condition.
So usually 2 chances against Giant's best saving throw.
