So in a Roll20 homebrew campaign, our group just hit lvl 3 and I took my 3rd level in fighter again. I've been wanting my character to have a "coming to" moment, and the DM has been playing with Deities reaching out to me as my character struggles to find a purpose. I always intended for my character to become a paladin, even starting with 14 CHA to make the transition easy. My problem comes here:
I feel like it makes more sense for my character, RP wise and thematically, to multi-class sooner rather than later. I can see no advantage to push fighter to lvl 5 as it will be wasted when I get to paladin lvl 5. I went battlemaster at lvl 3, and he is really falling into his role as a leader. I am worried about being underpowered if I fail to pick up the lvl 4 ASI, and leave off multi-attack for too long. Is it worth being kind of weak for now, in exchange for better progression into the paladin ranks, or should I go ahead and take lvl 4 in fighter? Lvl 5? The DM has made it clear that he will go by book rules, and that multi-attack won't build for both classes. If I take paladin next level, I won't have two attacks/round until lvl 8, if I go all the way to lvl 4, I do pick up an ASI, but I won't have multi-attack until lvl 9, and I'll never get 5th level paladin spells. Any advice?
Is the campaign more combat focused, or is it more RP focused? If your role is dependent on dealing out maximum damage, then extra attacks may be more helpful sooner than later, but thematically, does this work for your character?
It's a good blend between player rp and combat, but the DM can be kinda harsh with challenges. We almost got tpk'd this session by covened hags at party lvl 2 (luckily we only fought one in actual combat). It seems like he generally pushes the monsters to scare us and keep us on our toes. We have a sorcerer, monk, artificer(gunsmith) putting out dps, but I'm worried about losing relevance. We just hit lvl 3, I'm really the only tank other than a cleric with 18 AC. Im most worried about losing an ASI
You can always take the fourth level of Fighter later, yeah? If so, that could make sense as well, as perhaps the Paladin advancement is stunted by old habits.
I think an important thing to remember as well is that you will gain other things in place of your increased number of attacks. My suggestion would be to take the next level as Fighter for the ASI, then head into Paladin for two levels to get smite. Then grab your 5th level in fighter for the extra attack, and then maybe an extra level of fighter to get to 6 for another ASI. Then from there it's just a matter of finishing out whatever split you want to eventually have. It's always seemed strange to me though multiclassing into a Paladin/Cleric/Druid and then going back to training how to swing a piece of metal better (I realize this is my opinion) :-)
battle master dice paladin smites a second fighting style
if there are other people doing damage, you can focus on being hard to kill. Armor and shield and defensive fighting style should give AC around 20 which is huge. Divine shield is huge too. Second wind and lay on hands will make you even more hard to kill. Divine shield which you can quite easily hold with con save proficiency makes you nearly unhittable. and if you really need damage. action surge and battlemaster dice and smites will allow for a big burst.
Thanks for all of the help everyone. I've decided that it makes the most sense to go paladin next level. We have enough part members doing damage. The second fighting style taken for extra armor will be worth it. It's gonna be rough until I finally hit paladin 5, but honestly, this is what I want for the narrative, and the RP has always been more important than the build for me. I think I just needed the community to push me in a direction i was already heading.

Glad to hear it. RP is always worth it. That is why my current character dipped 1 level if Arcane Cleric instead of my next level in Ranger.

The big question is, what build did you have in mind? What mix of Paladin and Fighter? That will help determine how to proceed.
I have a build for a Paladin/Fighter...
http://ddb.ac/characters/2992368/j6drNM
He starts as a fighter for 3-5 levels, then 2-4 levels of paladin, then the rest of the fighter levels, then the rest of the paladin.
The campaign will determine if I split after 3 or 5.
Just transition to paladin.
When you finally reach level 5, you have:
battle master dice
paladin smites
a second fighting style
if there are other people doing damage, you can focus on being hard to kill.
I was under the impression that you could only have a maximum of 2 attacks in an action if you muliclassed. How’d you manage 3 on that build?
Fighter level-11:
Extra Attack
Beginning at 11th level, you can attack three times, instead of twice, whenever you take the Attack action on your turn.
Extended Signature
Yeah I see where my mistake was. Misunderstanding of a multi class rule
