I'm working on a character concept for an Arcane Trickster Rogue. Part of its background will be that he worked as the magic/arcane specialist in criminal gangs and therefore picked up a nickname associated with that particularly specialist role.
Sort of like how medics and corpsmen in the military are all called Doc (at least in fiction) or how Radio operators on ships before satellites was called Sparks. Or how muscle types in criminal gangs is called bruisers. Basically a nickname that's also a work title.
The idea is that the nickname should be a short single word, preferably no more than a single syllable. Relate to its particular specialist role or the role's most common work tasks in a clear and obvious way.
However, it shouldn't refer to the actual RAW or game mechanics, nor to common abbreviations for rules or game roles. So no ATs, DPS, Skill-monkey or Gishes.
So far I've only come up with the following. Will comment on them to give a clearer idea what I'm after and what I mean.
Sparks (Old nickname for an R.O on a ship. Fitting because spell casters creates their own sparks too.)
Tricks (Reference to the role of performing and doing tricks based on magic. Also a reference to the sub class name.)
Mags (Short for magician or magic. Like how Doc is short for Doctor and given to medics even though they technically doesn't have the same training and skills as a real doctor.)
Cane (Short for Arcane. Some reasoning as for Mags. Though I don't really like either since they both have strong connotations to words not relevant to the setting, i.e. Margaret/Maggie and walking stick.)
I like Sparks. I think it would be a cool nickname for an experienced magical trickster. I'm not sure why, it just feels right. But feel free to choose whatever you like.
The hands (not only for his rogue skill but also for the Legardmain signature feature.)
Edit: I like Smoke above too
Hands are a perfect nickname. Exactly the type I meant. Except that when I hear hands I think more of the thief in the group. The pickpocket and pick locker. The guy with good hands. Still, going to remember it and use it for a pure thief in a game sometime.
Another vote for "Hands" or "Hand" here. Was gonna suggest it, but saw it'd been suggested already. Speaks to both Rogue skills and signature Arcane Trickster spell.
I like "Tricks", too, though, except it might lend itself to teasing (what prostitutes do is often referred to as "turning tricks"), which might not be a bad thing!

Only thing that jumps to my mind is "Smoke" (as in magic & tricks are all smoke and mirrors)

Oh, I like the stage magician reference.

How about Wiz, Wisp or Imp?
Did actually consider Wiz but discarded it due to the inevitable pee-jokes.
Like Wisp.

I like Lefty. Or Trix. But Trix reminds me of the cereal, so maybe not. But Lefty sounds like a handy sorta guy, and I like that.
Chant (enchanter/verbal casting reference)
Manos - Spanish for hands. Or Manus, from Latin.
