I wanted to see if anyone had an explanation for this. I was double-checking my spell list before a new campaign starts in a couple weeks, and I felt like I was being gaslit about the Snare spell. I found that there are actually two different versions. The differences are as follows:
Version 1: - V, S, M components (30 feet of rope or cord, which the spell consumes) - Duration: until triggered or dispelled - The trap is triggered by a Small or larger creature - Subsequent DEX saves to escape are made with disadvantage
Version 2: - S, M components (25 feet of rope, which the spell consumes) - Duration: 8 hours - The trap is triggered by a Small, Medium or Large creature - Subsequent DEX saves to escape are made straight (no disadvantage)
I'm trying to figure out where these two different versions come from, and how, why and when the change occurred. I've gone between DND Beyond and other sites online for spell text, and noticed the change first on another site, but it seems DND Beyond now has Version 2 as well, even though I'm pretty sure I saw Version 1 here years ago.
On DND Beyond and other sites, Version 2 seems to be attributed to Xanathar's Guide, but I cannot fathom how this is possible, because XGtE was released in 2017, I can't find any news about it ever being updated, and I'm 99% sure that Version 2 is NOT the original version of the spell that was released! I know that just a few weeks ago when I was initially choosing spells for my new character, I was finding Version 1, and I'm only just seeing Version 2 for the first time today. There doesn't appear to be a new 2024 version of the Snare spell either, so I don't see that being the explanation.
Does anyone have a print copy (or downloaded digital copy) of XGtE that might show the old version? Does anyone have the slightest clue what happened here? It's making me feel crazy, haha
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
[EDIT: I have been informed that the site I found it on was not considered a legitimate site. Oops. The more you know. So I can't say exactly where, sorry.]
The first version was the playtest version of the spell, from the 2017 'Starter Spells' Unearthed Arcana release.
Thanks, I think that explains it. That UA version looks exactly like the version I remembered and found elsewhere. Thanks all for your help, I think my confusion has been cleared up.

I just checked my print copy of Xanathar's that I got the day it came out. It's the 25 ft. version.
There have been a few different printings of Xanathar's Guide to Everything since it came out, and there were errata in one of them, but the listed changes don't include anything about that spell specifically: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/sae/xanathars-guide-to-everything
Where exactly did you see version 1?

That sounds like somebody OP's in a campaign with made a homebrew version of the UA one.
Yeah, this seems likely.

Version 2 is the official version.
Version 1. Where they got it from, I don't know.

Cool, thanks for the confirmation.
