One time i was playing an beast master ranger ( a homebrewed version of the PHB one that me and the DM came up with ) and what he did was made the pet go on my turn, and every time i got an ASI for my character, i could then tame pets 2 CR higher than before. Long story short, after a brief venture into the underdark, my ranger came to tame a Carrion Beetle. Think a giant ( large in size ) beetle whose hide was made of rocks / chunks of ore, that i could ride on as a mount and that spit acid everywhere while i pelted enemies with arrows from atop, in addition to sick bite and claw attacks. It was a blast, thought it was sad when i lost it fighting a cave dragon :(
Tis my dawg Fang he's a gud dawg. Yes I was the country Druid with a wolf as an animal companion. Started with him soon as I could and had him up till we stop at about 14th level. Since party members would buff him he was very nasty but just lots of fun to have around. I think the GM just took control of him around 9th level since he was so overpowered.

What is the best companion/pet that you've had? What was fun to play? Have you ever had something rare or unconventional?
For me it was a silver snake that could spit ice. Didn't do much damage but was a cool feature.
hello

Back in 3.5 I had a chaos mage with a pet rock. It was a minor earth elemental with earthglide and tremorsense.
