You just seem to want validation so, In most cases I'd say this was a minor issue and over reaction. But I don't know the rest since we only have your word and don't know went on other session that may have built up for the DM.
It takes someone pretty disruptive for me to want to kick someone, and that wouldn't be it. I just don't know without having been in on your sessions.
But do know there are some thin skinned DMs through online game finder sites. And the number of players looking to DMs favors the DMs to be picky.
Now, I am pretty inexperienced, but I definitely think that five sessions at level 1 is a lot, especially the DM said you were only about halfway to level 2. If you were getting XP from other things besides combat, it was probably only like 1-3 points. It sounds like the DM is deliberately slow-walking XP gain to keep you at a low level. There are some good reasons for that, high level play is hard to balance because of all the abilities, and spending time with your abilities helps you get familiar with them so you know how to make the best use of them... but the DM kicking you after 5 sessions for asking about progress doesn't paint him in a good light.
I think you should count being kicked as a blessing, and look for a group with a better, or a least less touchy DM.
sort of depends, if the campaign is going to level 6 you probably want to slow the advancement down a lot.
I was in the campaign that this happened in. I also thought it was kinda bogus how they just got the boot with no warning. I can also confirm the DM tried to spin thigs differently to the remaining players about WHY they got the boot. All in all, the DM took the venting way to personally and their response was also disproportionate to the "offense." That campaign has since died after the DM changed their work schedule in order to have an outside reason to not interact with the rest of us after we politely voiced some concerns about the direction of the game and the sense of progression.
venting to someone is different than venting at someone. If you vent at them it is personal, you are going after them. And they have enough on their plate with their life, job, running a game etc to need to put up with some rando venting at them. It is generally why I think its best to game with friends, if you have a bad day people have some investment for why they should put up with your antics. Randos on the internet don't need the hassle and will put up with a lot less aggravation. one persons lighthearted sarcastic comment is another persons petty insult especially in text.

You slow down the later levels by more than the earlier ones. Level 1 gives you the fewest options, which means you'll be doing the exact same thing over and over again. If it's taking a while to level up, players will feel much less restless needing 10 sessions to go from 4 to 5 than needing 10 sessions to go from 1 to 2.
If you want to have a shorter-run campaign and end at 6, then end the campaign at 6 and start a new one. Trying to stretch a campaign going from 1 to 6 to, say, 150 sessions is going to make players restless.
You dodged a bullet being kicked from it. The DM took a while step from that. And seriously... JUST DO MILESTONE at that point. If you want people to be "properly leveled as the journey fits." Use the milestone feature. Don't change XP that is just a nightmare and a half. Also don't freak out because its a question asked. Hopefully you find a better game to be in.
