GaryCon was this week, and they announced Luke Gygax (Gary’s son) will be releasing Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk with WotC. (Melf, of acid arrow fame, was one of Luke’s characters back in the 70’s.)
No real details on what they mean by published through WotC, if it’s like the recent eberron book published by Keith Baker that’s kind of semi-official, if it’s a full setting book, what kinds of things will be in it, if it will be in print or digital or both (though Luke did show the cover, a Jeff Easley painting of Melf), or when it’s coming. But, it’s in the works.
Here’s a YouTube of Luke with Dan Ayoub, head of D&D, so you know it’s legit.
Side note to WotC even though they probably won’t see it: Why am I the one posting this? It’s not on here, or the discord, or dungeonsanddragons.com. Come on guys. You should have had something about this ready and had it go live just after the press briefing where it was announced.
Whoa system shock rolled! What an amazing news to see GREYHAWK supplement and adventures getting officially published again, and even more so with Gygax onboard!
So far the names i've read that are working on this include:
Luke Gygax
Jay Scott
Stephen Radney-MacFarland
Anna B Meyer
Les Reno
Norker
Andrew
Others
Stephen Radney-MacFarland on Facebook: Because I've been getting a good deal of questions. Melf's Guide (well, this one) is a project headed by Luke Gygax. It involves me, Jay Scott, the intensely talented Anna B Meyer, Les, Norker, Andrew, and others riffing on what we love about the setting Gary made, Luke played, and we all enjoyed. Other than that, I can't say much. NDAs and decorum. But I think you'll love the finished product.
They did say that during GenCon they’ll have more announcements. Including what they’re releasing this year and the year ahead. So I guess we’ll know late July. Assuming they actually say anything and don’t leave it to the internet to announce for them.
I wonder if this is the yet to be announced book coming out at the end of the year or something else coming out sometime next year
It is extremely heavily implied the Winter 2026 release is Dark Sun - they have all but confirmed that with their teasers. I would expect this to come early 2027 at the earliest.
I am excited about this project. From everything I’ve read, Luke seems like a cool guy who really knows his stuff and loves the game. Glad to see him involved and a return to the setting that really helped make D&D a household name.
Glad to see it, but pretty sure I’m not coming back to WoTC after what I perceive as the hatchet job on EGG.
What's EGG?
I presume either Ernest Gary Gygax or his son Ernie. And, regardless of which of those two Gygaxs are being referenced, we all know what is being dog whistled with “hatchet job” - the kind of content Luke Gygax has distanced himself from.
Nothing else to be said on that subject, particularly on a thread about forward looking excitement for a new product.

Ah, that makes sense. Did strike me as odd to comment on something one has no interest in after a year of inactivity. Thanks for clarifying
Also interesting that Dan Ayoub apologized to Luke Gygax twice (privately) for the way they treated the Gygax family (as mentioned by Luke at Garycon), that Luke and Dan are " the two that can fix this" (according to Dan).
You're entitled to feel that there's nothing else to be said on the subject, but Dan Ayoub does not agree.
Lots to be said on the subject, since the brand manager and Luke Gygax for D&D brought it up at the official announcements at Garycon.
There's a little bit of editorialising going on here, Luke's exact quote of Dan (timestamp link https://youtu.be/FwRB9N7Bq_k?t=601) isn't "for the way they treated the Gygax family", it was (quoting Dan) "I'm sorry for the way your family has been treated" and that Dan wants to "heal the divide between the family and franchise"
Which you know, given the activities of Luke's late brother, I can see why there might be such a divide...
Would be nice to see Grayhawk again. Not getting too excited. The group i run with tends to homebrew world more often than play in established ones, but i might get it just for me.

He/Him. Loooooooooong time Player. The Dark days of the THAC0 system are behind us.
"Hope is a fire that burns in us all If only an ember, awaiting your call To rise up in triumph should we all unite The spark for change is yours to ignite." Kalandra - The State of the World
Yes, player and DM options are always part of new releases, but the table i am part of also makes our own player options so depending on the details, we might not bother. I still want the book, no matter what my table says, i just think i will have to wait to use anything in it.

Luke is being brought on to consult on the book that WotC is publishing. He's one of the greatest living authorities on Greyhawk so it makes sense.

Really looking foward to this!

Luke gives me Brian Henson vibes. He understands why people like his father’s work and doing what he can to help his legacy
Glad to see it, but pretty sure I’m not coming back to WoTC after what I perceive as the hatchet job on EGG.

EGG = Gary.

Like Caerwyn, I'd much rather look forward to to the positive vibes I expect Luke is bringing to this Greyhawk project.

If it’s anything like the recent Forgotten Realms, Ebberon and the upcoming Ravenloft books it’ll most likely have new player options
