This situation came up in a recent game of mine and I’m hoping to get some clarification. My character has darkvision for 60ft and I’m holding a torch. Am I seeing bright light for 40ft and dim from 40-60 with nothing beyond, or am I seeing 40ft bright light and dim light from 40-100 with nothing beyond?
Darkvision lets you see Dim Light as if it were Bright Light, and Darkness as if it were Dim Light. It doesn't change the position of where areas of light and darkness are.
So, in your example, you are seeing it as if there were Bright Light out to 40 feet (the actual Bright Light area, plus the 20 feet of Dim Light which you see as Bright Light). You see the Darkness between 40 feet and 60 feet as Dim Light. Beyond 60 feet, your Darkvision doesn't do anything, so you see the Darkness as Darkness.
For future reference, questions like this are probably best suited for the "Rules & Game Mechanics" forum; "Bugs & Support" is for reporting bugs in the D&D Beyond software.
