As a parallel to the species/subspecies thread w/a similar name, I'm going to start a class/subclass version of the same idea!
My picks for subclasses..
Brought Back:
SHEPHERD DRUID NEEDS A REWORK BAAAAD.
Bilgewater subclasses
Tempest Cleric
Storm Sorcerer
Redemption Paladin
Fate Cleric
Satire Bard
Primeval Druid
The OG take on Strixhaven subclasses designed by Dan Dillon that were mangled into backgrounds by other designers, causing Silvery Barbs to no longer be a subclass ability, but a spell.
Introduced:
Some kind of Firefighter Ranger who can put out fires w/water and/or fight fire WITH fire
Sugar, Coffee and/or Tea-themed Sorcerer
Juggler Bard
Knife-throwing Bard or Rogue
Playing Card throwing/tapping Rogue
Food-themed Artificers(Baker, Patisserie, Candy maker, soda jerk, and/or chef) who can feed the party and energize them
Prism or Color Sorc/Wizard which can learn 2 of 3 cantrips for free:Light, Dancing Lights and/or Prestidigitation, as well as Color Spray, with the option to cast it prof. bonus/day w/o material components, in addition to Glyph of Warding, Symbol, both of the Prismatic spells, & specializing in Radiant damage & altering colors of spells to alter their damage into harmless/minimally harmful damage types
Solarsmith Artificer who uses light, then the Light & Dancing Lights cantrips at night, to power their devices, focusing on Radiant Damage
For classes: Brought Back:
Shaman
Mystic
Introduced:
A Green Lantern(& other Emotional Spectrum colors)-inspired half-caster class that uses empathic senses to bring ambient emotions to life, making temporary energy constructs(Thus never needing to buy weapons) and perform wonders at the risk of losing control and/or exhaustion, with more than 7 subclasses.
(Might create a spell-themed version of this thread sometime next week)
With occasional exceptions, most 5.0 subclasses remain usable in 5.5. Quite a few could benefit from a bit of re-tuning to balance them with more modern subclasses, though. Thus, my priorities would be the missing PHB Cleric domains (Nature and Tempest) and pretty much everything in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. There are a lot of iconic subclasses in Xanathar’s, but quite a few of them seemed underpowered even in a 5.0 context.
Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
Here also for the Twilight Cleric! One of my favorite characters was a Twilight Cleric brewer.
I have a feeling a reworked Twilight Cleric is going to feel quite a bit less powerful. It always seemed the subclass in 5.0 that I heard/saw the most DM's saying no to, or at least complaining about.

Oh, I don't doubt that. It was pretty strong (though I thought the people calling it "OP" were exaggerating a bit). I'm guessing they reduce or change the Temp HP that occurs every round from the Channel Divinity. I really liked the Steps of Night ability to "fly" around while inside the dome. I wouldn't mind them reducing the THP by making it be a bonus action or reaction to use, or only one creature per round instead of per turn or something, as long as the overall feel of the subclass remains.
I miss the psion and the martial adepts (warblade, crusader and swordsage).
I imagine the warlord like a martial adept focused into the schools of Devoted Spirit and White Raven. This could be interesting for a campaign of Birthright as if this was an alternate version of Warhammer: Total War.
I also I imagine the "oblate" like an update of sohei, a "monk with armour" and martial techniques (special attacks from 3.5 Tome of Battle).
My idea of shaman is a primal spellcaster but with ideas from vestige binder and incarnum totemist. The shaman summons an spirit ally, with a game mechanic like 3.5 pact magic. Spending points of essence the summoned ally can enjoy "upgrades" like a better natural armour. Of course this idea would need a lot of playtesting and feedback.
I am interested in the idea of a nahualt, a shapeshifter+primal spellcaster like the shifter class from Pathfinder.
The cultivator would be like a mixture of monk and spirit/psion spellcaster, inspired into fantasy Chinese fiction.
In the homemade section I suggested my ideas for a stealh+divine class (like a assasin monster-hunter), stealth+arcane (secret agent against enemy groups of spellcasters) and arcane+fighter (the user of a special magitek exosuit-powered armor that can only work for members of certain group).
Shepard should been the first redone. they eliminated one of the thematic feels of druid overly nerfing summon spells and its a druid specific f you ,since arcane can still do animate objects and animate dead.
If they're going to insist on Rangers being Hunter's Mark focused, then a Ranger Subclass focused on Archery. Not the Arcane Archer, or some other Fighter subclass, but an actual Ranger focused on Archery.
I know they are afraid to give extra attacks to druids because then why play ranger but at the same time they need a druid blade singer . it makes way more sense for a druid to be frontline then a mage.
We still need a functional equivalent of a 4th edition warlord; the Banneret does not qualify.
Fighter yells at you, heal 2 hit dice. Yes a fighter subclass that controls and buffs by yelling. Thematically very differant, and can be a lot of fun. Also Banneret did have a tiny bit of influence from warlord, it was just a very bad subclass, and didn't have the needed control or utility that a warlord would have.

Bladesinger is a classic lore based class from the AD&D era, originally it was an Elf Kit Class the old AD&D multiclass of Fighter Wizard , with a requirement for a female Elf with a long sword. They also had War Wizard which was also a fighter wizard. (it became Eldrich Knight) the OG gish before the term Gish was used and everyone called them 'Spellblades'. (Still hate that the Githyanki term is what the meme is now)
Druids have shapeshifts for melee... and do not need a Spellblade. It is also one of the better caster classes in D&D in this era, so it is not lacking in power, utility, or control. Rangers on the other hand are lacking in everything.

DM, player & homebrewer(Current homebrew project is an unofficial conversion of SBURB/SGRUB from Homestuck into DND 5e)
Once made Maxwell's Silver Hammer come down upon Strahd's head to make sure he was dead.
Always study & sharpen philosophical razors. They save a lot of trouble.

I am still looking forward to the Psion release personally.
