Sorry if this is obvious to most, but does language on Ability Checks apply to DCs? Like if you get a bonus to a particular ability check, does bonus apply to any DCs based on that ability? Or no since it's not a roll.
So if two players make a DC 15 investigation check and one of them has a plus 2 and the other has a flat 0 does the one with a plus 2 has to beat a 17? I’ve never heard of anyone doing that

Must be missing something because that’s exactly how I interpreted his question as well and if that were the case it would remove any benefit from having a bonus if the DC always increased by the same amount. Everyone would essentially be rolling with zero added

Thanks!
If you have an actual increase to an ability score or its modifier, it will affect all d20 Tests made using that ability, and any saving throw DCs calculated using that ability score's modifier.
If you have a feature that says something like "+5 to Intelligence ability checks", then that only applies to Intelligence ability checks and not anything else that's calculated based on your Intelligence score.
It may be easier to figure out what exactly you're talking about if you provide an example.
Sorry, what I mean is any DC based on your character, not a roll to meet an external DC. Like spell save DC for your spells or a Grapple DC for your grapples.
If I have a Monk with 18 DEX, proficiency bonus of +3, that is a Grapple DC of 15. But if I have something that grants +2 to DEX ability checks, would my Grapple DC go up to 17?
You mean would something that grants you a bonus to skill/ability checks increase the DC of the ability check another character had to escape a grapple your character initiated?
No, if the bonus doesn't say that it applies to such situations, it does not.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Yes, that is what I mean. Since DCs are based on your ability. But I guess they are not an ability check per se.
Thank you. I thought as much. Just wanted to be sure.
