My party has a few animal companions, and a key feature is that the companions grow with the party. I was hoping to get some info on how to account for those monsters in the 2024 encounter building rules. So far, I've been adding the monsters combined XP to the parties budget.
EX: high difficulty encounter: 4 level 4 players is 2000 XP, Each have an animal companion of 250 XP, so the encounter can have 3000 XP of monsters. Is this logic sound or is there a better way of going about this?
I have never added companions to the exp budget personally and I'm pretty sure that's not how the game is designed to be. I am pretty sure it's assumed in the encounter building rules that certain class will have familiars and companions.

It’s not just familiars though, they are full monsters that the party just has with them, all CR 3 currently.
