Glad to see they are willing to errata these, feels like a sign they are taking them seriously as proper game rules
GrandPyromania: That's one of the benefits we have as being digital first - we don't have to wait for a new print run to consider errata - we can do it in a much more nimble manner.
GrandPyromania: I should come in and levelset a bit - this isn't outright confirmation that there'll be a physical version of all this, it's more that there isn't anything preventing this content from appearing in a book in the future. If a future book can make use of the content from Drops, the design team has no issues with including it (after all - they're the ones writing this content to begin with!)
WOTC_Zac: First off - this sounds like a super cool campaign!
Transparently, rotating tokens is a pretty niche feature. For situations that call for it, I get why it would be super useful, but it is not in probably the most common 50 requests we regularly get. I would not plan for Maps to support that anytime soon.
We do plan on supporting custom uploaded stickers, although I can't give an ETA right now.
Other ways you could achieve this with what exists now in maps:
Using rectangle overlays like an arrow (we might have an arrow pattern for the overlay, but I'm on my phone at the moment and can't check)
We have a number of arrow stickers you could use and rotate around.
You could draw lines, headings, or movement paths with the draw tool.
You could keep the token hidden, but next to a sticker that represented the boat (or grab the Tom Cardos vehicle sticker pack, which has a number of boats). You can engage with the token, but the players just see the sticker.
Custom uploaded stickers is something we've wanted to do since we introduced Stickers last June! As we've been rapidly building out Maps' functionality, we sometimes have to choose between going deep and going broad.
Since the introduction of Stickers, we've also released: Reveals, Monster Reveals, Dice on Maps, Shared Dice across all platforms, including Mobile, Journals, Condition Tracking, and so much more.
Now that we've covered a lot of the other basics, you can see on our Roadmap we have custom uploaded Stickers, Reveals, and Monster Token Art as "In Progress"!
I totally understand how you don't want an ugly line overlay and that you want to use your custom designed ships. We definitely want that too. I hope we're able to get this feature out the door fast enough to satisfy you and your campaign!
Every single time I hear something new (to me) about Maps, I am astonished that it's lacking such basic and fundamental features.
WOTC_Zac: A few thoughts here: I think people often forget that Maps is not even 3 years old! And if you look at our rate of progress, we are moving at quite the clip.
And finally, Maps isn't trying to be everything to everyone. We're trying to be the best and easiest platform for supporting people playing D&D. That means there are features we are choosing to avoid because we don't feel like the added complexity is worth the benefit.
Many features are in the "We intend to" column - for example custom stickers/reveals/drop-in replacing token art are all on our public roadmap right now! And what you call persistent status effects we call Condition Tracking - and the first version of that came out just last month, with custom conditions coming out soon.
Maps is just under 3 years old - Roll20 has been around for something like 14 and other VTTs like Fantasy Grounds have been around since 2004! We've been making progress incredibly quickly, while staying laser focused on our user experience and our product philosophy of "Honda Accord, not F-16."
There are features where there's more controversy - dynamic lighting is the big one. A lot of people want it, and a lot of people love that Maps doesn't have it. Dynamic Lighting adds so much complexity to a VTT. We may do some sort of dynamic lighting one day, but if we do we'll find a way that's easy and simple to set up and doesn't require clicking hundreds of times to place walls, windows, and doors everywhere.
Then why doesn't token rotation exist?
Two big reasons:
First, there are probably 200 features like Token Rotation in our "quality of life" backlog of cool things we could build. Working on one of them means we're not working on the other 199.
Second, it's very easy to add one small feature and argue it doesn't add much complexity. But after doing that 200 times, your application suddenly has a lot of complexity. :) This is something we are very cautious about. One could argue that sometimes we're too cautious, and that would be a great debate! But we also don't define Maps and our featureset necessarily by what other VTTs do and how they do it.
We'll also be providing a lot of updates to this roadmap quite soon! Right now we're not providing a deeper-level roadmap (e.g. every bug we are working on) and are focused on giving you visibility on the major features the team is working on right now.
Things change constantly in software dev, which is why we're sharing at this level for now. A good example is the Rules Assistant project on our roadmap has morphed into a full site search revamp project that we'll be sharing more details on soon!
WOTC_Zac: Hi! Thanks for the great suggestion.
We are working on more and more ways to talk about what's coming down the pike (like our roadmap https://www.dndbeyond.com/en/roadmap which will get some post-Gencon updates soon).
I've managed things like what you're talking about at other companies. It's a lot of work! For a community as large as this one, intake, deduping, and organizing is a massive challenge.
We also have internal priorities shift sometimes for 1000 different potential reasons, which makes forward looking detailed roadmaps hard - people get excited when they see something then disappointed when it gets bumped. Sometimes we can explain why (although that takes time we could be spending building!), but sometimes we can't say why (and that feels bad to everyone!).
I'm a huge advocate for transparency and open discussion, but from personal experience, this approach has a lot of unexpected drawbacks that will probably keep us focused on other ways we can be transparent and open.
Request for novels being available on the DnDBeyond App
WOTC_Randy:This one is probably more up my alley since I'm in the digital publishing space. One of the things I love about this community is exactly this: you all come up with fantastic ideas and perspectives that give us a lot to think about! So please keep throwing them our way!
(And just to test the waters... any "appetite" for recipe books?)
You unlocked a core memory of mine! I remember perusing the Fantasy book section at Waldenbooks or B. Dalton Booksellers in the 80s and seeing lots of Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms books. At the time, I had not yet been introduced to D&D (thanks to "the panic"), but the covers looked so amazing (because childhood-me totally judged books by their covers). Anyway, I do remember not knowing where to start and it feeling a little paralyzing. Thanks for giving me and the team something to chew on!
WOTC_Randy:Hello there! As others mentioned, the map pack include extra maps to enhance your game play experience.
The maps required to play the adventure in Arcana Unleashed and Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall are already included in both physical and digital formats of the books. Additionally, the digital format comes prepared with quickplay maps, so the tokens are already set up so you can just dive in and play!
If you're looking for other maps that fit along the theme of spellcasting duels, magic academies, etc., this is the map pack for you 😄
WOTC_Randy:This is a title we've definitely talked about a lot and would love to have on DDB. One of the first questions we ask ourselves is whether or not a title can be supported well on our platform. Some revisions are done so that we can implement them in our systems, and we closely work with publishers to develop an approach. Other times, there's no good way to represent certain game mechanics well. This is the case with Sebastian Crowe and the Apothecary class. My friend and esteemed colleague, u/GrandPyromania has contemplated this a lot, and he may be able to provide more insight.
WOTC_Zac: We're in the middle of our design work for rebuilding the Campaign Creation process, which will include the ability to limit what sources players can pull from within a campaign.
If you've got a wishlist of features, this thread is a great place to let us know!
One Maps improvement I’d really like to see is better handling of Fog of War boundaries. (EDIT: Color match the fog of war and the background to hide where the 'edges' of the map are.)
WOTC_Zac: Huh. That is not something I've seen someone ask for before! Very interesting suggestion. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
I assume the answer will be no, but curious if any roadmaps for homebrew classes would ever be on the table for beyond?
WOTC_Zac: That sort of thing wouldn't be possible until the new game engine is fully released. I know that the team right now is heads down on shipping the foundational elements and less focused on all the stuff they are planning on doing after those foundational elements are shipped.
I know every DM preps differently, but I’d love to be able to create small note card-like templates for NPC entries in my campaigns with the ability to attach images and stat blocks to those entries.
WOTC_Zac: This is one of the features we've discussed for our DM Prep tools project!
Super excited to hear custom stickers are on the list as something being actively worked on. Pretty much every time I use the sticker system, my prevailing thought is "wait.. why?" There are a weird number of sticker types where they have a lot of effective duplicates (do we really need 5 different types of shuriken...?) and then a significant number of incredibly basic things that apparently do not exist. Magical portals. Mushrooms. Just like, some regular rocks? I feel one of the big problems with a lot of the current options is that they focused on making interesting designs, when what I really want is a bunch of small, simpler things I can make more complex by cobbling them together.
While we await custom stickers, if Wizards would like to take more of my money, I would happily buy a "Just the Basics" sticker pack full of clean and efficient basic, generally useful items!
Good to get an update on the third Drakkenheim book, even if the update is just “we know you want it, we can’t do it at the moment” because that at least gives me hope for after the rebuild is done.
As always thanks for summarising these
