I suspect that a new class of character is being introduced: the shaman. This is the simplest explanation.
If they were introducing a new class, we'd've heard about it in the advertising. They've said what the shaman subclasses are.
If the shaman is not a new class, then which of the current player source books is it found there in?
I tend to restrict myself to the options presented in the 2024 PHB, the Heroes of Faerun book and the Arcana Unleashed book. That stops most of the arguments about the precedence of various books. I try to avoid mixing content from the 2014 PHB and the 2024 PHB because in the 2014 PHB, you gained your sub class at Level 1 while in the 2024 PHB, your choice of sub class is delayed until Level 3. Why the designers and developers did that is an argument best served in another thread. I will not litigate it here. As a Hero Tier player, I just try to roll with the punches.
Okay. Then, for people who only know the 2014 PHB and the 2024 PHB, the shaman is a "new" class but for someone accustomed to the World of Warcraft game, it is simply part of the landscape.
So, for people trying to integrate the World of Warcraft expansion book into their existing campaigns, it will be a "new" feature. Just like when the barbarian, the sorcerer and the warlock were the "new" kids on the block.

It’s not a subclass, it’s a reskin of the Barbarian with a couple new/reworked subclasses (elements and ancestral guardian). They published an article (one I shared earlier in this thread) explaining how to use the subclasses introduced in the upcoming book and ones in the 5.5 PHB to best represent the WoW classes.
We will not see a new class until the psion/mystic class to be published. This should be relatively soon because Dark Sun and Star Wars collab are coming soon. The next step would be an article of Unearthed Arcana.
I imagine the 5.5 shaman like a mixture of one from 2nd (published in its own sourcebook), the binder class (Tome of Magic 3.5) and the totemist (Magic of Incarnum).

Star Wars being blended into D&D!? Do we not already have such a thing with the Spelljammer setting?
I never liked Dark Sun. Its post-apocalyptic style of play just felt wrong, like a role playing adaptation of the Mad Max movies. No doubt I will see threads discussing Dark Sun and I will avoid them.

Don't worry, you already missed most of the Dark Sun discussion threads.
As for starwars, this is official "We can just say Jedi and Lightsabers" Starwars and not sci-fi elements peppered into D&D. I haven't written it off but i am not sure it will fit well with the D&D engine especially when it comes to magic. The Force and the Weave produce very different effects so unless star wars suppliment has its own magic system, then it is going to be weird.

I mean we’ve seen the force allow healing, lightning attacks, and necromancy with the witches of Dathomir

The simplest explanation is actually what it says in the article, which, again, you can read for yourself if you want to know the answers instead of speculating: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/2256-become-a-champion-of-azeroth-with-these-13-world

I have the expansion book on order. I can wait, I can wait.
