The only things you really need to get started are some other people to play with and to maybe take a look at the Basic Rules (which are free, see here).
Try searching for a local group or gamestore that has game nights or sessions of DnD.
Also, I’ve found just watching others play like online can be a huge help. Even if you don’t understand everything going on at first, it gives you specific things to look into rather than just reading a book cover to cover.
Welcome to your new life long addiction! Try the Looking For Games section of the forum and look for games marked as LFP or "Looking for Players" there. I would avoid "paid" games until you've played at least a session or two for free if you're into paid games. I've heard they tend to be of a higher consistency and quality but I've never been in a paid group.
Hey everyone! Just starting out and don’t know where to actually start and what I need to get started. Any help would be of great thanks!
As Wagnarokkr said the first thing you need is to at least glance at the free rules. They’re only about 35 pages and cover the most common rules (you can worry about the niche stuff later.) Next you need a group to play, try local game stores or libraries to see if they have groups or clubs but if all else fails find your three or four nerdiest friends and start your own group. Figure out which of you is stupid enough to be the DM and try running a few one shots, theres plenty of great ones about if you google “free D&D one shots” although I really like Wild Sheep Chase and Wolves of Weldon. Once you’ve done a couple of one shots you will all have figured out if it was fun and only then do you need to start spending money on things like full campaigns and dice…so many dice

Against random dice.
