So, I basically have two main questions about downtime in DH (I am a player so no spoilers please :) )
1) Has anyone given any extra efficiency to elves during downtime, since they have 4 less hours dedicated to sleep each day? Do you guys know if this question has been addressed anywhere?
2) Anybody have any fun optional downtime activities? I found the activities available to be pretty lacking in terms of giving people something to do from week to week.
As to the elf question, I believe in 3.5 there was an interesting bit of flavor in regard to Warforged. Essentially, it boiled down to "you can't spend more than 8 hours doing any one thing in a day, otherwise you get bored and experience diminishing returns on productivity." I have no sources to cite, sadly... my college English teacher would be appalled.
For example, I work a full-time job as a preschool teacher, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. My "downtime" activity is basically "practicing a profession" of herding halflings. I get a short rest in there somewhere. I also take an extended rest in the form of replying to topics of this forum and, eventually, a bit of sleep. The rest of my day is spent taking short rests, eating, and traveling. This is not enough time to do another full downtime activity. Even if I didn't need to sleep as much, I still couldn't handle herding my halflings for longer than I do. Don't get me wrong, I love my "bubbies" dearly... but Mr. Mike needs some "me" time. You know?
In the case of your elf, only having to trance for 4 hours means you can spend more time replying to posts on this forum or doing other benign activities (GM discretion). You might pick up proficiency with the Cobbler's Tools and spend some time keeping your party member's shoes in tip-toe (read:top) shape or writing in your journal about the day's activities.
As for the second question, be sure to look at the PHB, DMG, and XGtE for all the available downtime activities. I usually play a druid or some other neutral good care-bear, but the Crime downtime activity just seems fun. When all else fails, carouse!
