First I have to admit two things. I do not have any of the 5e books yet. And I need glasses but have not been to an eye doctor yet. Why is that important? Well If there were a larger print version of all 5e books I would buy them...so my question is about 5e skills or is it ability checks? I have played 5 times the last 6 weeks (about 18 hours) after a 30 year hiatus! You can see how little experience I have with any edition past the 1980's...
The rule books and online copies including this one do not seem to help me much so if anyone can help I greatly appreciate it. If I am a 5th level Cleric with Life domain and a 19 Wisdom do I have bonus with proficiency and wisdom modifier on all skills that Wisdom is the base? (Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, survival) Or do I still need to pick two as it is described in a few rule supplements. (Once again I can not even check the players handbook right now. I am using the 5thsrd.org where it states the "Choose two from History, Insight, Medicine, Persuasion and Religion. Which is it or is it both? Do I get +4 because of Wisdom and +3 because of level proficiency. I recently used an online character sheet that automatically added bonuses when I entered the ability scores. I think this is what started my confusion. My apologies for being clueless, I failed my intelligence checks. Thank you for your help.
As a 5th level cleric, yes you have a bonus in skill checks equal to +7 (+4 WIS modifier and +3 proficiency). and yes, at the character generation, you have to choose two skill to be proficient with from that list (plus other skills from your background selection). For the rest of skills, you do not add your proficiency bonus.
Yes +4 for all others based on Wisdom. But each skill check has its own ability score. For example, Persuasion uses the Charisma modifier.
That part I understood, thank you so much for your help! This changes a lot. It kinda seems that a difficulty check would be easy if it were Hard or lower. I would have to roll an 8 or lower to miss a Hard check in my proficient skill. In other words, most of our party can already pass all Moderate or lower checks with the greatest of ease. Failing only on a 1, 2, or 3.
It's really very simple. Do you have proficiency in a skill, saving throw or weapon? Then you add your proficiency modifier to the skill check, saving throw or attack roll. If you don't, then you don't.
What ability modifier is used depends on the skill, saving throw or weapon (or what the DM says).
Also, I think you have your difficulty levels confused. Hard is a DC of 20, so with a +7 you'd need to roll a 13 or higher.

You are correct. Thanks for the clarity. Also only noticing the differences between the cell phone version and desktop version of this site. I should also have posted these questions in a different thread. I will fix that in future posts. Thanks for the help everyone.

So + 7 for the two skills I chose to be proficient in but +4 with all others? Sounds simple enough but wanted to be sure. Thank you!

Yep. Then it is up to the DM whether making things difficult (increasing the DC) or not.
