Hey all, I have an opportunity to be a player after DMing forever. I will be playing with a group of new players and new DM. I am thinking I want to play a class that is most helpful to supporting other classes. I am thinking a druid or cleric, but wanted to shoot it out to all you for any ideas. Thanks in advance!
Those are definitely ones that help round out groups and take a level head to make the most of. But I think the cleric role could be handled by a newb that just thinks like a healer. They can grow into some of the cooler abilities the class offers, but start simple. So I’d counsel you to lean druid for yourself. Or maybe bard. That’s a support role that if you know what you’re doing can leave the party really impressed and entertained.
Thanks for the advice. Yeah i am leaning toward druid. I haven't played druid before tbh so it'll be fun and new. I know one of the players is probably going to be picking bard because that's just his personality and has expressed interest in it.
I'd say a Bard is one of the best support classes to help new players out, as they have some complex abilities that be beneficial to a party, but due to their heavy lean towards roleplay elements, it could remove some of the limelight from the new players. That isn't necessarily a bad thing when introducing them, but something to be mindful of.
To be honest; go with your gut feeling. You want to have fun too, and I'm sure the DM will rely on your help guide the party from an in-game perspective, but you want to allow them to find their own path too.
You could also go the Wizard route, they have some nice support spells and with your super low HP the healers in your party will become more important. Although if Druid is what you want to go with definitely choose Druid, I'm just saying Wizard canbe a good support if you want to go that route.
I just started a character specifically for this purpose! Started as a variant human paladin with inspiring leader. This gave me a bit of healing, tankiness and temporary hit points for the party each day. Level 2 I dipped into bard for bardic inspiration and some healing/buff spells. Level 2, paladin again for some more spells/healing and defensive fighting style. Been working out great so far, constantly making everyone else feel a bit better!
