im about to start a new project designing a DnD character sheet app for iOS. I'd be interested in hearing what you would like to see in this app that would make you want to use it. For example the ability to print out the created character sheet.
I look forward to reading your suggestions and ideas.
Curse has also started a project designing a DnD character sheet app. You may be even more interested in sticking close by, as it's called, "Phase 2" around here. ; )
Hehehe yes they are indeed but I'm not involved in that ;-)
I am unsure about the wisdom of attempting to garner suggestions and support for an app that would not only be illegal (if it contains any of the rules and information for D&D system) but also competition for D&D Beyond...on the D&D beyond forums...
Yeah, I'm closely in agreeance with Synieth. I'm sure it'll be a fun project but there's definitely the legitimate challenge of designing around a collection of data under copyright without proper permission. However with that said, yeah I've used character apps up to this point to do something very similar like Orcpub and some native iOS applications but there are drawbacks like limitations or having to manually type in spell descriptions and more because otherwise they're even more so illegal?
But I mean, I've designed character sheets before for my own personal use and that's always been really fun so if you develop it for yourself that's a different situation.
I personally look forward to the solution Curse is going to present in Phase 2, especially since they're partnered with WotC.
I hope to use the app for DnD Beyond when it comes out, although as of right now I have a couple of apps on my phone for DnD for resources and dice rolling if I forget my dice. Really looking forward to the official app from here though, to the point to where if I were offered a limited beta test from a mod here to test it on a few devices I would (external APK install in developer mode on official Android devices and to see if it will run on Amazons Fire OS offshoot, hint hint to any mods, lol) ;-)

I use summon instrument to summon my kettle drum, hold it overhead like Donkey Kong, and chuck it at the nearest kobold.
I did this once. It was never released and never will be. The SRD released just as I was nearing finishing it and I moved to Hero Lab. Damn glad I did. Easily one of the best tools in my DM suite.

Pfft! A myth!
There was a time, when I was a young lad, when I believed in the prophecy of the fabled "D&D Beyond Character Sheet". But no more! Call me a heathen if you will, but I, for one, have lost faith and will wander these wastelands forever decrying the promise of the Curse Overlords and their wicked temptations!

I don't see this being an issue when using only the character creation data and not using the app for profit but distributing it for free. I have written to Wizards about this several days ago just to make sure but am yet to receive a reply.
This is a good plan for several reasons. One, it's a complex coding project that will build your skills and confidence. Two, it will be useful and can be as flexible as you make it. Three, I don't have much confidence that this new DNDBeyond tool, in it's free version, will be entirely useful. If it is, you can always abandon your project.
A few other words. I'm sure you know, but just in case, this is a gigantic project. It will be so intricate and involved that you will pull your hair out, if you don't plan properly. As the adage goes, "Weeks of coding saved me hours of planning.".
Also, make the tool just using the SRD database, but allow for homebrew options. That way, if a user wants to hand make monsters in the MM that aren't in the SRD, they can. They can just copy from the MM. This will help you avoid violating the licensing restrictions that I'm 99% sure WotC will address, if they respond to your e-mail. The only things of theirs that you can give away, are things that they already give away for free. Even if your app is free, the material not included in the SRD is not.

It's an issue and they will reply as such. If you release the only content you can release is the SRD. Alternatively only include mechanics and change any descriptive text by at least 20%. Alot of work in itself.

What, specifically, are you pointing out with this reply? Nothing posted here, that I see, is close to violating any of that.
