I have a habit of reading books and watching movies and trying to figure out what classes the main characters would have if they were in a D&D world. I recently rewatched Return of the Jedi. Soo...
My thoughts are: Firstly, it probably varies depending on the individual characters. (Palpatine seems more wizardly and evil spellcasting/Force using than Darth Maul, for example)
Secondly, they probably all have at least one level in a spellcasting class for the Mage hand cantrip, plus, (as Tonio mentioned in another thread) possibly Witch Bolt for the thematic Sith lightning.
But is there some general formula you would use for Sith/Jedi in D&D? If not, what classes would you recommend using?
I feel like it definitely varies depending on what character, but Eldritch Knight Fighter would probably work if you're more lightsaber focused, especially since summoning your weapon could kind of be like pulling out the lightsaber blade, and they have a bit of Magic/Force.
Warlock is probably the better choice cause if you take the Pact of the Blade it gives you decent melee/lightsaber skills in addition to magic/force ability. Plus if you take the Repelling Blast invocation it can kind of be like using force push, and they also have the Otherworldly Leap innovation which with the somewhat questionable jumping mechanics of 5e can allow them to jump absurd distances.
As far as Force-like spells I'd probably suggest; Chill Touch (Force Choke). Mage Hand. Suggestion. Witch Bolt, Lightning Bolt, or Chain Lightning (Force Lightning). Telekinesis.
There's a lot of stuff you could do and you probably won't be able to get the perfect combination of everything, but there are some good options for a Jedi/Sith
I just googled "dnd 5e Mystic" and it came up. Apparently it's a UA class
Yeah it is UA. Some might say it is complicated or overpowered (I say that). But it is an entire class dedicated to using psionic abilities and many of them fit force powers to a T.
Seconding Eldritch Knight, a neat thing you could do with War Magic (the level 7 feature) is cast Shocking Grasp (Force Lightning) and then immediately follow up with a bonus action weapon attack.
I was thinking about this topic too, not long ago. Don’t know if you would like it, for its not pure jedi/sith thing, but it’s pretty close.
I created a high magic setting, where the Weave and arcane itself gain some of the Forces characteristics. Dark and light sides of magic are as you know them, and for each, there is a class of spellcasters.
Devotion to light, or dark, jedi or the sith, is based on ‘how do you gain your powers’ question: Much like elves with their high magic, there are casters (Int based classes) who do not ripe the energy from the Weave/Force to manifest desirable effects via spells, but they manipulate the flow of it with spells (thanks to their deep understanding of the world) to let effects materialize naturaly. This casters teach the philosophy of understanding and pacifism, much like buddhist do (who are core to jedi philosophy). On the other hand, there is another group of casters (yeah, that’s my alternative for ‘force-user’ term), who choose the path of power and passion. They harness the energy from emotions (Cha based classes) and their ambition, will to change and often... dominate.
Soo, there we have a classes: Sith order is represented by paladins (warriors), sorcerers (mystics), bards (assassins) and warlocks. They may not be evil, but the wounds they are causing to the Weave/Force is leaving a void in their footsteps and hearts. Eventually, they succumb to the nitche-sith philosophy completely and they gain ‘dark’ subclass of their class (Oathbreaker, Collage of Whispers) or a edgy spice for their spells (Storm sorcerers spells becoming dark-purple/red). And good ‘ld jedi are artificers, wizards and classes (Spellthiefs, Eldritch Knights) who come to the temple to seek shelter and inner peace. They are learnt to feel the Weave/Force and use its gifts to ‘maintain the balance’ (“destroy the dark one b****es!”). There are more numerous than their enemies, but often less ruthless, ambitious and powerful. Their sects often view themselves as a peace keepers, but there is a fragile line between that and purges of your philosophical opponents (especially when you know they are destroying the world with their evil and selfish use of magic).
There are also clerics, who are devoted to some aspects of the world (gods are more of the ideals there), and can be therefore evil and good.
I view Druids and Rangers as an old guard, nearly forgotten and dead (much as a ancient neutral force-users in Star Wars), worshiping the nature/force/weave directly, both in its dark and light manifestations.

For the weapon, a [Tooltip Not Found] is probably the closest visually, but the sword of sharpness is probably the best fit mechanically.
For classes I'd say a spellcaster multiclass with either 7 levels of Monk (for deflect missiles and evasion) or 7 levels of Rogue (for uncanny dodge and evasion). The best fits for spellcasting would be martial/caster combos, so Paladins, Clerics, Hexblade Warlocks, Bladesinger Wizards, or Eldritch Knight fighters would all be appropriate.
Some others that might be useful are healing spells, Enervation (replicates Palpatine's move at the end of Ep 9), Sleep (replicating Kylo Ren's abilities in Eps 7/8), Sending, etc.

Yeah, that looks great. I was honestly thinking of Darth Vader as some kind of multiclassed Way of Shadow Monk/Eldritch Knight.

As for a lightsaber, it's basically a colored Sun Blade.

Honestly, probably mystic.
What is the mystic class? I've heard it mentioned before but I've never actually seen what it looks like

I'm thinking that the Hexblade Warlock is probably a close fit although the Eldritch Knight Fighter is a close second.

I definitely agree that it's overpowered, after looking at it. But you're also right about it being a pretty good fit for the Jedi

I thought Oath of Conquest Paladin looked very Darth Vader-like to me, at least from the text of the oath and from some of the abilities.
I used a paladin (oath of devotion) and a warlock (pact of the fiend) to make Darth Vader. (https://ddb.ac/characters/20712038/LGGGr9)
Or Paladin oath of Conquest
Oath of conquest works too
Paladin.
Fighter, Psychic Warrior.

Maybe Bladesinger. It seems perfect.
