So I am playing as a Forest Gnome Druid at lvl 1. I am looking to be the healer for our party, I know that druids aren't exactly the best when it comes to heals, but it's what is happening.
My question is, would be better to stick as druid at lvl 2 and take circle of dreams for balm of the summer court? Or to take 1 lvl as a cleric and take the life domain for the + healing. Our DM has already stated that they are okay with giving goodberry the extra healing per berry. Just wondering if it makes more sense to have the extra two free heals from the Balm of the Summer court, or to have the extra + healing and added bonus of the huge goodberry?
Our party consists of, Ranger, Fighter, Rogue and Sorcerer. I know our ranger will be taking a healing spell at lvl 2, but it's not much for back up heals. Our party is all pretty new to playing and a little unsure of what we are all doing long term for our characters.
Druids can be great healers. If you like that role, then take Circle of Dreams and have fun with it!
Just a comment. After 3rd level the party will be a lot more survivable and getting knocked unconscious won't happen every single fight. So you don't need to be dead set on having a healer other than Goodberry.
I fully plan on continuing down the Druid path. I will be going full circle of dreams. Just curious if it was worth dropping that point into cleric for the extra healing or not.
Ultimately I know that it is my choice on how to play it. But wondering what people would suggest. I worry that with Healing Spirit that the party might not be smart enough to utilize it's full potential. Why I am looking for better more direct heals. (Currently have to really nag party to remember that I gave them goodberries.)
5e tends to be a high damage game and healing spells in combat usually can't keep up with the damage that party members take, even with a dedicated healer casting Cure Wounds using high level spell slots. Your healing really only needs to bring people who are knocked unconscious back onto their feet, and Goodberry does that perfectly with the added benefit of providing food for a full day. The short rest mechanic let's you recover back to full HP between encounters unless you're in a marathon where your DM is making you think and strategize to conserve your resources without having the ability to take short rests. Plus Goodberry let's your teammates use the berries to bring YOU back up when you get knocked unconscious and no other healing spell does that!
Stay a druid and focus on battlefield control spells that require concentration and being a battlefield medic while you maintain your spells. They're surprisingly effective once you figure out how to use them properly!
So Tim you think it isn't worth grabbing that point in cleric for the added bonus to goodberry? it seems like such a huge bonus to add those extra 3 hp's. But perhaps I'm thinking too small. Our game is just taking a long time to progress. We only have the ability to play about 2hrs a sessions and we are playing Adventure League. So higher level stuff just seems so incredibly far away.
I don't think the Life cleric dip is worth it for just the healing increase. Balm of the Summer Court and Healing Word should be sufficient for in-combat healing. Then just teach your party members how best to use Healing Spirit out of combat.
the life cleric nice also the cleric itself has some nice cantrip/lvl 1 spell but i would take the druid to level 3 first Healing Spirit just to strong out of combat you fully heal people in low levels. You don't need the goodberry to heal people back up to full just prevent being at deaths door. I would take the lvl1 life cleric eventualy though the buffed Goodberry can save you some spell slots/heal the ones who lost way more then rest or minor injuries, if you use it before a succesfull long rest, just not before lvl3 druid.

Also if you stay druid, at 3rd level, you get access to Healing Spirit, which is one of the best heals available!

Nox - Adult Oblex - The Trials
Jartrin Ephok - Dragonborn - Zanoliv
Bunol - Grim Angel - The Floating Lands of Goriate
I would check with the DM before assuming Goodberry can heal unconscious characters (since it states the creature uses an action to eat the berry).
Druid is one of the few classes that has good capstone features and spell wise, it can heal as well or better than clerics.
