Soon will my first time DMing, I will be using WaterDeep Dragon Heist my main problem is that I watched CritRole too much and I want to make a good introduction to the city of Waterdeep Ive read about the city but I cant come up with a good paragraph to introduce the city and be able to transition to the actual start of the campaign in the Yawning Portal tavern. What can I do?
Google "loremaps faerun" and click on the icon for Waterdeep. It's a collection of information from previous editions and some from the current timeline. I've used this a few times for my group. Won't exactly be a paragraph, but my players are able to get a better feel for the city and overall area by hearing about population, trade, government, etc. Basically, a lot of the stuff that you would generally know if you lived there. Also, if you have it, the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide has a good intro for Waterdeep.
So wanna DM, good for you kid, but it dont matter if yove not got the right stuff.
sorry that was a bad joke
So a bit of advise if you will take it matt mercer is a great DM and you can learn a ton of great lessons form him but remember that your going to be different from him and wonderful in different ways.
now down to the practical stuff for descriptions you should probably make some use of your 5 senses pick out some eye catching phrase's that might not make sense but will evoke an image of the city
and as well right up a few little scenes that you can describe around the city make a few for all the places the party will go and write them on a scrap of paper and trow them in when you feel things are getting slow.
something like " you see a goblin giving a gnome a piggy back ride as they try and steal form a bag slung over a Goliath's shoulder, while lifting his companion the goblin also seem's to be trying to pick her nose"
small details added in a lot of times add more to the feeling of a place than one big paragraph
but for that introduction if i might suggest you try describing the city as a camera focusing in start by describing mt waterdeep then the blackstaff's tower then the yawning portal then maybe the party sitting at a table (fill all this with bits of descriptive writing as you see fit) dont worry about getting everything in one go just start with doing a few small things well
"... as we go further down through the wall's of the tavern, we see you siting at a rounded table a table that some might of called ramshackle if the barkeep wasn't so frightening"
maybe something like that
overall dont worry gm'ing for the first time is stressful enough trust the book its a great adventure and expand it where you want to.
hope this was helpful and hope everything goes well
