The first part of the spell text says "You create a ward against magical travel that protects up to 40,000 square feet of floor space to a height of 30 feet above the floor." 40,000 square feet is a fairly massive amount of space. If this spell were cast in a room that is in a building within a town smaller than the radius of the spell, would the entire town then be warded against whatever specified creatures are called out during the casting? What, if anything, would prevent the spell from extending to its full radius regardless of where it's cast?
Is the intention of the spell that it creates a ward only within certain spaces such as dungeons or buildings or could it be cast in a way to essentially shield over 7 miles from teleportation and demons?
That is about 200×200ft or 40×40 squares of a map (assuming 5ft squares. Many dungeons use 10ft squares). In fact this is not enough area to cover most dungeon floors in 1 casting.
Thanks for the examples. It's good to see what the area looks like in relation to something else.
It looks like there is potentially a bug in the spell text then:
Casting Time: 10 minutes Range/Area: Touch/7.757575757576 miles
The original question remains though, if cast inside a room of a building would the ward extend out the size of a football field, which could be outside the building and into others?
I would say that since the spell does not say that it is blocked by stone or anything else it would cover the whole area including outside the walls of a room.
The spell description appears fine in the manual and when you select it. It's only when you click on the spell from within a character's sheet that the descriptive text to the right shows the incorrect calculation.

That does appear to be a bug.
Up to the DM. Considering the target is the "floor", I'd probably limit it to the room or building it is cast in.

James Haeck wrote an article about Forbiddance where he said that he used it once to cover an entire dungeon. It looks like it was designed to cover a whole building, or more, not just a single room.

Right. I was leaning more toward building than room. I don't think it matters too much. If you cast it with intention of warding the building, it only wards the building. If you cast it with the intention of warding a town, it wards as much of the town as it can.

40000 sq feet is approx 1 acre of land. Not really that big of an area.
You would have to cast the spell 5000 times to cover 7 sq miles.

I don't see that online or in the app.
