According to what I remember BadEye mentioning in a dev update somewhere that the images from the purchased content are free to re-use for personal use.
So I downloaded a few dungeon maps from Tomb of Annihilation and Princes of the Apocalypse and imported them into various free-to-use virtual tabletop engines - Astral TableTop, Roll20, and MapTool. And for the life of me, I can't get the grid on the image and the grid on the VTT to line up, no matter how much resize tweaking I do to the map image and pixels per square on the VTT grid. I can get part of the map grids to sync up, but elsewhere on the page the grid is way out of whack.
Has anyone else had this issue and came up with a solution?
Other than re-making the map using the VTT's native toolset from scratch, or re-purchasing the content sold on VTT markets, or ditching the map & grid to go Theater of the Mind, I can't seem to figure it out.
(Minor edits for clarity. After I click "send" mistakes leap off the page.)
1) Crop the DDB map in any old image editor so that the grid aligns with the upper left corner. A lot of the WotC maps don't have grids that go all the way to the edges, but if you measure or temporarily draw the grid all the way to the edge, you can cut off the edge so that the upper left of the map aligns with the image's grid. Then when importing into Roll20 I know, it snaps the map into the upper left corner and if sized properly, the grid should align fine.
2) Turn off the VTT grid. The tokens don't snap into the grid (although that's probably a bit more realistic), but at least with Roll20, you can still measure distances and such just fine.
I haven't really tried it, but I just realized there's also:
3) In Roll20, at least, you can turn down the opacity of the grid to make it fainter, and if it's faint enough (or even invisible) it should still function the same but any slight offset will hopefully not be too annoying.
You can still measure distance in Roll20 with the grid snap turned off?
Oh right, you can eyeball it based on the grid already drawn in the map. Got it. Thanks!
Now to fiddle with fog of war settings.
Using the grid on the map works, but also the ruler tool still works fine with the Roll20 grid off. It just goes by number of pixels (and the default, I believe is 70 pixels = 5 ft., but that's customizable per map). It works that way for those who want to go entirely gridless.
There's a pretty good program out there that helps with aligning maps to VTTs called Map Align. You should be able to snag it by putting that in Google. It will help you get the maps about as close as you can get them.
