So we are a new D&D group with all new players and DM starting on the mines of phandelver. We got to Cragmaw Castle at player level 3 and started making our way through, we found the back entrance and got the jump on the boss and moved through the dining room and then to the room with the grick in it. After a decent roll our druid was able to identify it as a grick but that was about it. deciding to leave it alone they went decided to pass it and was investigating the next room that had goblins at an altar. Now as i said we are new players and i am playing a Tabaxi Kensei monk, trying to roleplay better i was very curious about this creature i had never met before and wanted to investigate so i stayed behind slighty and threw a chunk of meat towards it. (before arriving at cragmaw we had an encounter with a bear and i thought i would take some meat for porvisions) He ate the meat as i threw it, so i tossed another this time more in the direction of the other curtain leading to the goblins. I had the great idea i was going to lead him in there and have him attack the goblins. He went to get the meat, so one more throw and i could get him in there possibly but i rolled a 5 on my throw and it hit the wall next to the curtain. Impatient the barbarian and druid started fighting the goblins so i rushed in and started helping, after the fight while they investigated i lifted the curtain up with my bow and seen the grick there. Thinking i could possibly still use him to attack something i set another peice of meat down in front of me and backed up a bit. Then taking another peice of meat i held it in my hand... This time there was an animal handling check. Crit success. He ate the peice of meat only slightly cutting my hand with his beak as he grabbed it. In my mind im thinking the animal handling was so that he didnt eat me and I am still wanting to lead him to another room, so i took the last large chunk of meat i had and held it up, as the grick went to grab i pulled it back so he couldnt grab and just said follow. My DM then hands me a monster card saying i have a grick pet! well longer story somewhat shorter we finished our night after cleaning up the few remaining goblins in the castle and ended our session. So we are now figuring out how we want to handle pets and companions stats and such. We are going to make it be a long process for me to train this thing outside of it just not attacking me because i feed it. as i slowly get better at it he will have a better chance of actually helping in combat. We thought a animal handling check at start of combat will decide if he helps or not, starting like over 17 he helps under and he sits back and hides. As i train him more that number will get lower and lower and have him eventually leveling with us gaining another hit die of health and maybe a stat point. Anyways just telling this little story because ive been a gamer my whole life and never have i had as much fun as i did saturday night when all the cards fell right and i tamed a monstrosity of a pet Grick. Was extremely impressed with the way our new DM handled it all off script and think all in all it went well even though we are a little curious as to if this is going to be too big of a bonus or if we handled it in a bad way. Anyone else out there have the Grick encounter turn out this way or think we are complete noobs who may ruin our own game? lol anyways this was a long read but hopefully in interested someone!
No matter what the fun you had because of the choices you made are what dnd is all about. Long read but can tell it was exciting so why would that be wrong? Hopefully you can enjoy many more random encounters like that as you play.
I'm really impressed how your new DM did that. My first time DMing I had to look up what armour class was and all my players hated me. I've redeemed myself now but back then I was nowhere near being capable of improvising that.

That sounds so great.
