Hello all. I'm not new to D&D, but it's only been very recently that I've gotten my hands on the core rulebooks for 5e, minus the Monster Manual. Last year, I flirted with 5e for a bit, I even have a previous account here (that I since have lost my access to, hence this account) but I lost interest because my friends weren't that interested. I bought the core rulebooks about a month ago, and that reinvigorated my interest in 5e. When I actually showed off what 5e was all about to my friends, they expressed interest themselves and a campaign is potentially kicking off.
Lately I've been doing solo experiments, trying out builds in certain ways, finding excitement in some ways, and disappointments in others - but never large disappointments. But the one observation I've seen is that, absent a couple of things, there's much less of a temptation to min-max compared to 3.5 and Pathfinder. For instance, I can use a barbarian wielding a greatsword and not feel a bit ******. While Brutal Critical still works best with using a greataxe, the difference isn't huge when you're using the Great Weapon Fighter feat and still chewing through foes. Even without it, the difference doesn't seem to matter.
I'm impressed at how modular everything is in 5e - it's very easy to, for instance, customize certain aspects. I can occasionally be influenced by media i'm consuming at the time - right now, I have a personal imagining of a Vengeance paladin as a Dark Knight from Final Fantasy XIV, and it works. It works very well.
I know I'm late to the party. But I'm enjoying myself right now with it. I hated 4th Edition, and ended up almost exclusively in Pathfinder. Now, to get my game started. Barring that, I might need to find an online game. I asked a question in the DM forums, but as it got no replies I thought perhaps to introduce myself here. So...hello!
Hello! Sorry you didn't get a reply on your question, as you can imagine there are a lot of posts that fly through here it is difficult to get to them. I hope you found an answer if not then perhaps I can try to be assistance.

Hi I'm Chris! Been playing and DMing DND for 9+ years, I still love to learn but I still wish to share my stories and experiences for others to enjoy/view. May the dice ever be in your favor! :)
